Four essential accounts of war in the New World
This book will be a joy to all those-academic and casual-who have
an interest in the Seven Years War as it was fought in America in
the middle of the eighteenth century-the conflict we now know as
the French and Indian War. These narratives are too packed with
action and incredible events to give details here. They are all
shorter works which, without companions, would have been unlikely
to see publication individually, but joined together the reader can
immerse himself in the times and be enthralled by the voices of
those who experienced these momentous times. Here are Rogers,
Israel Putnam and other famous Rangers who weave their presence and
deeds through each account. Here are the Provincials and the
Regulars-the Royal Americans and the Highlanders. Here are Fort
Bull, Fort William Henry, Crown Point and Ticonderoga. Here are
Monroe, Amherst, Howe, Johnson and many others. This is the
experience of war against the French and their fierce Indian allies
in the deep woods of the American Frontier. Raids, ambushes,
flights, captures, ordeals and escapes fill all the pages of this
truly indispensable book
In the summer of 2022, Lee Berger lost 50 pounds in order to
wriggle though impossibly small openings in the Rising Star cave
complex in South Africa—spaces where his team has been unearthing
the remains of Homo naledi, a proto-human likely to have coexisted
with Homo sapiens some 250,000 years ago. The lead researcher on
the site, still Berger had never made his way into the dark,
cramped, dangerous underground spaces where many of the naledi
fossils had been found. Now he was ready to do so. Once inside the
cave, Berger made shocking new discoveries that expanded his
understanding of this early hominid—discoveries that stand to
alter our fundamental understanding of what makes us human.
Distinctly shaped depressions containing a fossil bones appear to
be burial graves. Bits of charcoal and blackened rock ceilings
point to the deliberate use of fire; charred animal bones suggest
fire used for cooking. A stone hidden in among a naledi skeleton
has a shape similar to Neanderthal tools. All have been previously
known as uniquely defined characteristics of Homo sapiens. So what
does it all mean? Join Berger on the adventure of a lifetime as he
explores the Rising Star cave system and begins the complicated
process of explaining these extraordinary finds—finds that force
a rethinking of human evolution, and discoveries that Berger calls
'the Rosetta stone of the human mind.'
But it would be unfair to the reader to reveal what happens when a
gang of professional crooks gets wind of the scheme and moves to
muscle in on this bettors' dream of a long-odds situation. Worked
out with all the meticulous detail, terror, and suspense of a
nightmare, the tale is, on one level, comparable to a Graham Greene
thriller; on another, it explores a group of people, their
relationships fears, and loves. For as Leslie A. Fiedler says in
his introduction, "John Hawkes.. . makes terror rather than love
the center of his work, knowing all the while, of course, that
there can be no terror without the hope for love and love's defeat
. . . ."
While investigating his mentor's life and death, Michael, a
voyeuristic fashion photographer, travels through a Dionysian
landscape where sex is daydream, women and horses share the same
erotic power, and perversity is the rule. An inventive mix of
biography, history, erotica, and classic whodunit, "Whistlejacket"
is John Hawkes at his best as he blurs distinctions between death
and desire, image and language, art and morality.
This is a new release of the original 1930 edition.

The story within this beautiful limited edition is about Virginie,
an 11-year-old girl leading two lives one as a servant to the
aristocratic Seigneur, a creator of erotically receptive women for
the decadent nobility, in 1740; the other as the young sister to a
Parisian taxi driver, a patron of a circle of prostitutes, in 1945.
