Approaches to Discourse Analysis (Hardcover): Cynthia Gordon Approaches to Discourse Analysis (Hardcover)
Cynthia Gordon; Contributions by Susan U. Philips, Donal Carbaugh, Eean Grimshaw, Streeck Jurgen, …
R5,256 Discovery Miles 52 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A groundbreaking collection by leading scholars that spans a broad range of social situations, cultural contexts, and analytic perspectives The contemporary landscape of discourse analysis-which examines spoken, written, and multimodal communication-is so diverse that, as volume contributor Deborah Tannen observes, "discourse" has become almost synonymous with "language" and, for many scholars, extends well beyond it. The ways in which we communicate grow and change and so do approaches to discourse analysis along with the diversity of topics, analytic contexts, and disciplinary foundations. How do we conceptualize discourse? What are the various approaches to studying it? And how can we put these approaches into dialogue? Scholars within the field of linguistics and beyond contribute to this volume with discourse analyses in multiple languages, contexts, and modes. These snapshots show the different ways language is used in modern social situations-from email messages between professors and students, to Twitter activism, to political trolling on online news articles, to video-chats between US doctors and patients. Collectively, the chapters highlight the diversity and complexity of the field. Across these varied approaches, what emerges is a common understanding of communication as fundamentally connected to human agency and creativity and as embedded in and constitutive of our social and cultural worlds. Approaches to Discourse Analysis demonstrates the importance of the diverse perspectives that various approaches to discourse bring to bear on human communication. Linguists and other readers interested in the interplay of language and culture will gain new insight and understanding from this rich compilation.

The Ethnomethodology Program - Legacies and Prospects (Paperback): Douglas W. Maynard, John Heritage The Ethnomethodology Program - Legacies and Prospects (Paperback)
Douglas W. Maynard, John Heritage
R1,671 Discovery Miles 16 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It's been more than fifty years since Harold Garfinkel created the field of ethnomethodology—a discipline that offers a new way of understanding how people make sense of their everyday world. Since his book Studies in Ethnomethodology published in 1967, there has been a substantial—although often subterranean—growth in ethnomethodological (EM) work. Studies in and appreciation of ethnomethodological work continue to grow, but the breadth and penetration of his insights and inspiration for ongoing research have yet to secure their full measure of recognition. This volume celebrates Harold Garfinkel's enormous contributions to sociology and conversation analysis, exploring how ethnomethodology emerged, the empirical consequences of Garfinkel's work, and the significant contemporary work that has resulted from it. Douglas W. Maynard and John Heritage bring together experts from a wide range of theoretical and empirical areas to create the first comprehensive collection of work on EM that encompasses its role in "studies of work," in Conversation Analysis, and in other subdisciplines. Chapters highlight ethnomethodology's distinctive forms of ethnographic inquiry and its influences on a host of substantive domains including legal environments, science and technology, workplace and organizational inquiries, survey research, social problems and deviance, and disability and atypical interaction. The book explains how EM especially helped to set the agenda for gender studies, while also developing insights for inquiries into racial and ethnic features of everyday life and experience. Still, there is much of what Garfinkel called "unfinished business," which means that ethnomethodological inquiries are continuing to intensify and develop. Harold Garfinkel and Ethnomethodology ddresses this unfinished business: not only drawing attention to past accomplishments in the field, but also suggesting how these accomplishments set the stage for future endeavors that will benefit from EM-inspired approaches to social organization and interaction.

Talking About Troubles in Conversation (Paperback): Gail Jefferson Talking About Troubles in Conversation (Paperback)
Gail Jefferson; Edited by Paul Drew, John Heritage, Gene Lerner, Anita Pomerantz
R1,827 Discovery Miles 18 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Few conversational topics can be as significant as our troubles in life, whether everyday and commonplace, or more exceptional and disturbing. In groundbreaking research conducted with John Lee at the University of Manchester UK, Gail Jefferson turned the microscope on how people talk about their troubles, not in any professional or therapeutic setting, but in their ordinary conversations with family and friends. Through recordings of interactions in which people talk about problems they're having with their children, concerns about their health, financial problems, marital and relationship difficulties (their own or other people's), examination failures, dramatic events such as burglaries or a house fire and other such troubles, Jefferson explores the interactional dynamics and complexities of introducing such topics, of how speakers sustain and elaborate their descriptions and accounts of their troubles, how participants align and affiliate with one another, and finally manage to move away from such topics. The studies Jefferson published out of that remarkable period of research have been collected together in this volume. They are as insightful and informative about how we talk about our troubles, as they are innovative in the development and application of Conversation Analysis. Gail Jefferson (1938-2008) was one of the co-founders of Conversation Analysis (CA); through her early collaboration with Harvey Sacks and in her subsequent research, she laid the foundations for what has become an immensely important interdisciplinary paradigm. She co-authored, with Harvey Sacks and Emanuel Schegloff, two of the most highly cited articles ever published in Language, on turn-taking and repair. These papers were foundational, as was the transcription system that she developed and that is used by conversation analysts world-wide. Her research papers were a distinctive and original voice in the emerging micro-analysis of interaction in everyday life.
