This book, originally published in 1977, is a survey of European
historiography from its origins in the historians of Greece and
Rome, through the annalists and chroniclers of the middle ages, to
the historians of the late eighteenth century. The author
concentrates on those writers whose works fit into a specific
category of writing, or who have inlfuence the course of later
historical writing, though he does deal with some of the more
specialist forms of medieval historiography such as the crusading
writers, and chivalrous historians like Froissart. He maintains
that 'modern' history did not develop until the 18th Century.

This book presents three decades of writings by one of America's
most distinguished historians. John Higham, renowned for his
influential works on immigration, ethnicity, political symbolism,
and the writing of history, here traces the changing contours of
American culture since its beginnings, focusing on the ways that an
extraordinarily mobile society has allowed divergent ethnic, class,
and ideological groups to "hang together" as Americans. The book
includes classic essays by Higham and more recent writings, some of
which have been substantially revised for this publication. Topics
range widely from the evolution of American national symbols and
the fate of our national character to new perspectives on the New
Deal, on other major turning points, and on changes in race
relations after major American wars. Yet they are unified by an
underlying theme: that a heterogeneous society and an inclusive
national culture need each other.
Much more than a travel narrative 360 Degrees Longitude: One
Family's Journey Around the World is a glimpse at what it means to
be a "global citizen"--a progressively changing view of the world
as seen through the eyes of an American family of four. After more
than a decade of planning, John Higham and his wife September bid
their high-tech jobs and suburban lives good-bye, packed up their
home and set out with two children, ages eight and eleven, to
travel around the world. In the course of the next 52 weeks they
crossed 24 time zones, visited 28 countries and experienced a
lifetime of adventures. Making their way across the world, the
Highams discovered more than just different foods and cultures;
they also learned such diverse things as a Chilean mall isn't the
best place to get your ears pierced, and that elephants appreciate
flowers just as much as the next person. But most importantly, they
learned about each other, and just how much a family can weather if
they do it together. 360 Degrees Longitude employs Google's wildly
popular Google Earth as a compliment to the narrative. Using your
computer you can spin the digital globe to join the adventure
cycling through Europe, feeling the cold stare of a pride of lions
in Africa, and breaking down in the Andes. Packed with photos,
video and text, the online Google Earth companion adds a dimension
not possible with mere paper and ink. Fly over the terrain of the
Inca Trail or drill down to see the majesty of the Swiss
Alps--without leaving the comfort of your chair.

"No one writes more thoughtfully or interestingly about the
history of the profession than Higham does." -- Laurence Veysey,
University of California, Santa Cruz.
"A classic in the field, probably the best overall picture of
American historiography we have." -- Richard L. Bushman, University
of Delaware.
The persistence of racial inequality in a democratic society may
be the gravest problem confronting the United States. It has surely
been the most intractable. Yet the torrent of scholarship and
comment unleashed in recent years by the question of race provides
a general reader with little overall understanding of the solutions
attempted and the resulting outcomes. These essays by ten leading
scholars offer the most compact comprehensive appraisal we have of
how the modern civil rights movement arose, what changes it brought
about in relationships between blacks and whites, and how it led to
affirmative action, to multiculturalism, and eventually to the
present stalemate and discontent.
Contributors are Christopher Beem, Lawrence Bobo, Erwin

Ravitch.
