Noted biblical scholar John McNeill (The Church and the Homosexual) offers further insight into the role of sex in the Bible and how the original viewpoints by Church Fathers has been twisted by the Catholic Church over the years. This book also offers a festschrift by current scholars in honor of McNeill. John McNeill was co-founder of the New York City chapter of Dignity, a group for Catholic gays and lesbians. For over twenty-five years, he has been active in a ministry to gay Christians through retreats, workshops, lectures, publications, etc. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Human Rights Campaign Lifetime Achievement Award.
With the publication of his groundbreaking "The Church and Homosexuality" in 1976, John McNeill placed himself in the vanguard of scholars who were challenging long-held assumptions about the Bible and homosexuality. Through his continued scholarship, spiritual reflection, and untiring activism, McNeill has brought hope and affirmation to thousands of gay and lesbian Christians. "Both Feet Firmly Planted in Midair" is McNeill's autobiography.
The second book in John McNeill's pathbreaking trilogy for lesbian and gay Christians, Taking a Chance on God brings a gay perspective to fundamental Christian questions: How can we understand suffering and death? How can we overcome fear, anger, and guilt? What does it mean to love God? What gifts do we bring to the body of Christ?
Father McNeill's outstanding work, which convincingly establishes that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality, has brought comfort to thousands of gay and lesbian Christians since its original publication in 1976. In this fourth edition, the author calls on the Vatican to make a public act of repentance for its homophobia. "Blessed be that John McNeill's courageous classic is available again".--Carter Heyward, Episcopal Divinity School.
