Histories of seaports and coastal resorts have usually been kept in separate compartments. This book brings them together and looks at how resort development affected historic ports during the rise and development of the seaside holiday in Europe from the 18th century to the 20th, and what the attributes of ports (fishing, harbour crafts, the whiff of the exotic, fishermen's homes and families) contributed to the attractions of resorts. Case-studies drawn from across Europe, from Wales and the Netherlands to Norway, Latvia and Spain, bring original perspectives to bear on these histories and relationships, and consider their influence on seaside heritage and regeneration at a time when coastal settlements are increasingly using their past to secure their future. The book will interest academics in tourism studies, history, geography and cultural studies, as well as provide essential information and analysis for policy-makers in coastal regeneration.

If England was 'the first industrial nation', Lancashire was emphatically the first industrial county the first to develop, over a wide area, the combination of steam-powered factory industry and urban sprawl which says 'Industrial Revolution' to most people. It was also one the first fully industrialised areas to experience catastrophic economic decline in the inter-war years. Much has been written about particular aspects of the Lancashire industrial experience, and the social causes and consequences of the changes that took place, but there is not full-length social history of the county as a whole, looking at developments in the long run and comparing and contrasting the patterns of change in the south-eastern textile district, on Merseyside and north of the Ribble. Why did Lancashire become a stronghold both of Puritan activism and Roman Catholic survival, and what were the long-term consequences of this? Was the 'Industrial Revolution' really funded by the profits of the slave trade? Why was working-class Lancashire in the nineteenth century apparently first Chartist, then Conservative? Was Lancashire the original centre and true home of 'Victorian values', of a culture of thrift, enterprise and self-reliance? This is the first social history of an English county to span the centuries from the sixteenth to the twentieth, looking at all levels of society and analysing politics and the power structures as well as technological innovation and material wealth. More importantly, it studies a particular vital and controversial place and period, and takes account of continuities as well as changes. The proclamation by the United Nations that 2012 would be the International Year of Co-operatives represents a milestone in the history of the international co-operative movement. During their heyday the leading spa resorts became hotbeds of political and diplomatic intrigue, and gathering-points for high society. As such, they also became important businesses, and distinctive, carefully-managed urban environments. 'Taking the waters' at a mineral springs resort fell into eclipse over much of the Western world in the mid-twentieth century, only to revive in more diffuse guise as 'health and wellness tourism' in the new millennium. This book examines an important body of practices and experiences from the perspectives of health, pleasure, conspicuous consumption and display, urban governance, culture and politics across a quarter of a millennium, drawing its examples not only from the British Isles, France, Spain and Central Europe, but also from the United States and Australia. Ideas about what it is to be British have recently become subject to change and discussion. The end of Empire, the loss of world power status, the collapse of old industrial communities, the dedine of Protestantism, and the rise of nationalism in Wales and Scotland, have all served to change the perception of what it is to be British.
