Lawrence Gordon Clark directs this double bill of horror dramas
adaptated by the BBC from two of M.R. James's classic ghost
stories. In 'A Warning to the Curious' (1972) Mr Paxton (Peter
Vaughan) travels to English seaside town Seaburg hoping to find the
last of three Anglo Saxon crowns belonging to the Agers family
whose last descendant has recently died. When he uncovers the
crown, however, he finds himself haunted by a ghostly figure. In
'The Stalls of Barchester' (1971) Dr. Black (Clive Swift) is
cataloguing the Barchester Cathedral Library when he comes across
an old diary belonging to Archdeacon Haynes (Robert Hardy) who died
mysteriously. Whilst reading the entries Black soon discovers that
Haynes may have been cursed upon the death of his predecessor after
which he was tormented by supernatural goings-on.

Filled with interesting and original insights, Children in
Contemporary African Fiction makes for engrossing reading, both for
the general reader and the academic. With a keynote tone at once
empathetic and non-sentimental John Kearney explores an impressive
number of novels by writers from a variety of African countries. He
displays special concern with the experience of family life, school
life and religion; different kinds and levels of deprivation; and
the exploitative uses of children by adults, among them the use of
children as soldiers in harsh conflict situations. He also shows
great adroitness and understanding in discussing issues of
developing sexuality raised in several of the novels. Despite their
variety, a central thread links these works: the authors of the
chosen works allow their central characters to be involved in the
construction of their own lives (however limited in some cases
their degree of agency may be). At the same time, most of these
novelists make their focus as realistic as possible, resisting the
idealisation of their child characters – or what John Kearney
refers to as `sacralisation’.

May the peace of God guard and keep you in the testimony of Jesus
Christ. The book you have in your hands was written over the course
of six years. Part of the reason that it took so much time to write
is that I am disabled with bi-polar manic depression and hyper
compulsive disorder. At the time of this writing I am still
receiving counseling from my psychiatrist, Dr. Robert Roddy, who
has worked with me for many years to help me become stabilized. I
wrote this poem as an expression of gratitude for what the Lord has
done for me and to give tribute to Christ for his passion. It is
the love of Christ that has saved me from a life of extreme trail
and struggle. I would like to thank you my pastor, Steve Gilman,
for helping to shape the poem into what it is today. When I first
wrote the poem it rhymed, but had no meter, so Pastor Gilman helped
me to put it into the metered verse that you find in this final
version. Finally, it is my hope that others with disabilities who
read this may come away with a renewed sense of possibility. Christ
has worked with me through my disability and gives me hope. My
prayer is that you will come to know that hope for yourself.John
KearneyJohn Kearney lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attends both
First Baptist Church and Mercy Seat Lutheran Church. In his free
time he loves to ride his bike and spend time with his grown
daughters. This is his first book.
