It has been known at least since the end of the century that the
polar areas play a very important role in the formation of the
Earth's climates. It is also known today that they are the most
sensitive regions to climatic change, and are thus perfect case
studies for the detection of such changes. The most serious
obstacle to the study of climatic and other geographical elements
of the polar areas (including the Arctic) has always been the
severe climatic conditions which prevail in these regions. Because
of these extreme con- tions, research into particular elements of
the climatic system (including the atmosphere) began here much
later than it did in lower latitudes. For instance, the whole area
of the Arctic was not sufficiently covered with a network of
meteorological stations until the late 1940s (and even then there
were large areas of the central Arctic and the Greenland interior
for which no data were available). This is probably why it was not
until the start of the 1990s that a body of work began to appear
which analysed in any depth climatic variability for the Arctic as
a whole. While a considerable number of papers had been p- lished
before this period, most of them were local studies presenting
highly localised information, providing air temperature
measurements but often little else.
This title presents an in-depth study by a number of international
contributors on the issues surrounding the increasing
professionalization of the language-media sector, and its demands
for ever more highly trained employees with broader skills
repertoires. As a research area, education in the fields of
translation and interpreting has received growing attention in
recent years, with the increasing professionalization of the
language-mediation sector demanding ever more highly trained
employees with broader repertoires. This trend is evidenced in the
present collection, which addresses issues in pedagogy in a variety
of translation and interpreting domains. A global range of
contributors discuss teaching, evaluation, professionalization and
competence as they apply to a range of educational and linguistic
situations."Translator and Interpreter Training: Issues, Methods
and Debates" presents an in-depth consideration of the issues
involved in this area of translation and interpreting studies, and
will be of interest to all students and academics working and
researching in the field.Published in association with the
International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies
(IATIS), "Continuum Studies in Translation" aims to present a
series of books focused around central issues in translation and
interpreting. Using case studies drawn from a wide range of
different countries and languages, each book presents a
comprehensive examination of current areas of research within
translation studies written by academics at the forefront of the
field. The thought-provoking books in this series are aimed at
advanced students and researchers of translation studies.

Bill Kearns is a Special Education teacher living in Annapolis,
Maryland. This collection of poems spans more than 20 years. The
works in part one begin during some of his chaotic high school and
college years. Part one also contains poems written during 10 years
of dissatisfaction with multiple jobs and other issues. Part two
contains poems written after Kearns found teaching and began to
discover what can only be described as the gift of grace.
A unified collection of stories, "Dreams and Dull Realities" plays
variations on the theme of imagination's colliding with concrete
reality. The collection's lyrical, comical, touching, and absurd
stories portray seven male and five female Irish-American and
Latino protagonists whose vibrant interior lives contrast sharply
with their dreary exterior lives. Beginning with the prize-winning,
"Flight," the collection takes readers on a tour through childhood,
adolescence, adulthood, and aging in Philadelphia and The Bronx,
employing a variety of styles. Internal monologues depict the
thoughts of children and teenagers. A parody of sports announcers
describes a Friday commute. A loquacious Dominican sister narrates
the tale of her "tragic" trip home for Thanksgiving.
Expressionistic detail illuminates the bizarre weekly ritual of a
group of retired men. Written and revised over the course of more
than twenty years, the twelve stories of "Dreams and Dull
Realities" form a singular powerful work.

"Why didn't they know? ... He could see the darkness of their
souls, the void that drove them to huddle together at all times ...
He saw the souls, too, of all the other swim clubs that he had
joined or visited over the years, clubs filled with equal measures
of hypocrisy, deceit, and meanness, each one seeming to its
members, as primitive societies did to theirs, to be all that there
is, the whole world."
Saturated with what he has learned of Classics and history, a
16-year-old boy reflects upon the flow of recent events in his own
history: his discovering his Irish heritage, his loss of a job, his
receiving an Artistic vocation, his traumatic experiences of
unrequited love. These events become psychic cataclysms that
destroy his traditional worldview and force him to create a new
one. They also teach him what it means to become an Artist and a
man.
Exploiting imagery ranging from Greek mythology to video games
and employing conventional and experimental techniques, "The World"
is a passionate, multi-layered, poetic depiction of an artistic
soul's maturation. Twenty years in the writing, "The World" is a
work that should be read again and again.
