Variability of Air Temperature and Atmospheric Precipitation in the Arctic (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): John Kearns Variability of Air Temperature and Atmospheric Precipitation in the Arctic (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
John Kearns; Rajmund Przybylak
R4,430 Discovery Miles 44 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It has been known at least since the end of the century that the polar areas play a very important role in the formation of the Earth's climates. It is also known today that they are the most sensitive regions to climatic change, and are thus perfect case studies for the detection of such changes. The most serious obstacle to the study of climatic and other geographical elements of the polar areas (including the Arctic) has always been the severe climatic conditions which prevail in these regions. Because of these extreme con- tions, research into particular elements of the climatic system (including the atmosphere) began here much later than it did in lower latitudes. For instance, the whole area of the Arctic was not sufficiently covered with a network of meteorological stations until the late 1940s (and even then there were large areas of the central Arctic and the Greenland interior for which no data were available). This is probably why it was not until the start of the 1990s that a body of work began to appear which analysed in any depth climatic variability for the Arctic as a whole. While a considerable number of papers had been p- lished before this period, most of them were local studies presenting highly localised information, providing air temperature measurements but often little else.

Dreams and Dull Realities (Paperback): John Kearns Dreams and Dull Realities (Paperback)
John Kearns
R485 Discovery Miles 4 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A unified collection of stories, "Dreams and Dull Realities" plays variations on the theme of imagination's colliding with concrete reality. The collection's lyrical, comical, touching, and absurd stories portray seven male and five female Irish-American and Latino protagonists whose vibrant interior lives contrast sharply with their dreary exterior lives. Beginning with the prize-winning, "Flight," the collection takes readers on a tour through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging in Philadelphia and The Bronx, employing a variety of styles. Internal monologues depict the thoughts of children and teenagers. A parody of sports announcers describes a Friday commute. A loquacious Dominican sister narrates the tale of her "tragic" trip home for Thanksgiving. Expressionistic detail illuminates the bizarre weekly ritual of a group of retired men. Written and revised over the course of more than twenty years, the twelve stories of "Dreams and Dull Realities" form a singular powerful work.

"Why didn't they know? ... He could see the darkness of their souls, the void that drove them to huddle together at all times ... He saw the souls, too, of all the other swim clubs that he had joined or visited over the years, clubs filled with equal measures of hypocrisy, deceit, and meanness, each one seeming to its members, as primitive societies did to theirs, to be all that there is, the whole world."

Saturated with what he has learned of Classics and history, a 16-year-old boy reflects upon the flow of recent events in his own history: his discovering his Irish heritage, his loss of a job, his receiving an Artistic vocation, his traumatic experiences of unrequited love. These events become psychic cataclysms that destroy his traditional worldview and force him to create a new one. They also teach him what it means to become an Artist and a man.

Exploiting imagery ranging from Greek mythology to video games and employing conventional and experimental techniques, "The World" is a passionate, multi-layered, poetic depiction of an artistic soul's maturation. Twenty years in the writing, "The World" is a work that should be read again and again.
