Much has been made of the post-war Japanese economic miracle.
However, the origins of this spectacular success and its effect on
the region can actually be traced back to an earlier period of
Asian history. In Japanese Industrialization and the Asian Economy
the authors examine the factors which contributed to the period of
major industrialization from 1870 to 1940. Comprising of nine
chapters by eminent economic historians, Japanese Industrialization
and the Asian Economyoffers a valuable guide to the origins of
economic dynamism in the Pacific Rim.
Much has been made of the post-war Japanese economic miracle.
However, the origins of this spectacular success and its effect on
the region can actually be traced back to an earlier period of
Asian history. In "Japanese Industrialization and the Asian
Economy", the authors examine the factors which contributed to the
period of major industrialization from 1870 to 1940. They trace the
roots of this growth back to 17th-century rivalry between Japan and
China and describe how this acted as a spur to the expansion of
Japanese manufacturing skills. They go on to examine how the
development of the Asian market was an important pre-condition of
Japanese economic growth but was, in turn, fostered by that growth.
The volume comprises nine chapters by eminent economic historians.
While the style is non-technical, details are backed up by diagrams
and graphs. "Japanese Industrialization and the Asian Economy"
offers a guide to the origins of economic dynamism in the Pacific
Rim. Latham has also published "Decline and Recovery in Britain's
Overseas Trade 1873-1914", with Platt and Ranald (Macmillan, 1993);
and "The Market in History", with Anderson (Croom Helm, 1986).
In this fast-moving thriller, mystery surrounds a tragic and
life-changing event at Talaqui Academy. Eleven-year-old Luis
Montero becomes embroiled in a dangerous web of intrigue as he
searches for the truth about the attack on his school friend. Could
it be that the criminal gang that terrorised his family two years
earlier have returned to haunt him again? Loyalties are tested to
the limit as, one by one, dark secrets emerge. Greed, revenge and
love fight for supremacy as fate brings together the lives of
strangers from different worlds ...and no-one is above suspicion.
Loyalty Is The Strongest Glue is a gripping "whodunnit" that twists
and turns its way across Colombia before building towards its
page-turning climax.
A young boy witnesses the abduction of his parents and the
destruction of his family home. Can he find out the truth about
their disappearance and their ultimate fate... and can he discover
the identities of the men with the strange tattoo on their wrists?
Nine-year-old Luis Montero lives on the edge of the Colombian
rainforest in the shadow of the Andes Mountains. The brutal attack
on his family leaves him alone with only his pet dog, Maya, for
support. Together, the pair set out on a quest for answers. Why
would these men want to destroy his family and what is the
significance of the silver key handed to Luis by his father,
moments before he was taken? As the dramatic events unfold, Luis
must uncover secrets from his father's past and escape the very
real danger that surrounds him on his search. Will he find the
truth and solve the mystery... before time runs out?

At last -- a first programming in Java course that is truly aimed
at students who have not programmed before (It has an entry point
for those who have.) * Using neither the confusing objects first'
approach, nor the confidence destroying objects late' ordering,
students are instead taken gently from their natural task oriented'
view of problem solving, through the basics of programming and then
soon onto objects. * Every programming and Java concept is
introduced, Just in Time, in the context of one of more than a
hundred program examples, so motivation is never lacking. Even when
objects are introduced, readers immediately see their benefit, and
thus happily augment their task oriented' view with the object
oriented' one. * Programming skill, being at least 51% confidence,
is built in manageable layers by undertaking over one hundred
pieces of coursework. * Other learning enhancing aspects include
coffee time questions, end of chapter collected concepts, no use of
non-standard library code, and independence of any
confidence-entrapping learning environment. John Latham has been
teaching first programming since 1982 using various languages and
styles, and this course has been running since 2004 at The
University of Manchester, UK.
