Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Perhaps the most influential anthropologist of his generation,
Claude Levi-Strauss left a profound mark on the development of
twentieth-century thought, equal to that of phenomenology and
existentialism. Through a fertile mixture of insights gleaned from
linguistics and from sociology and ethnology, Levi-Strauss
elaborated his theory of structural unity in culture and became the
preeminent representative of structural anthropology. La Pensee
sauvage, published in French in 1962, was his crowning achievement.
Ranging over philosophies, historical periods, and human societies,
it challenged the prevailing assumption of the superiority of
modern Western culture and sought to explain the unity of human
intellection. Unfortunately titled The Savage Mind when it first
published in English in 1966, the original translation nevertheless
sparked a fascination with Levi-Strauss's work among generations of
Anglophone readers. Wild Thought: A New Translation of "La Pensee
sauvage" rekindles that spark with a fresh and accessible new
translation. Including critical annotations for the contemporary
reader, it restores the accuracy and integrity of the book that
changed the course of twentieth-century thought, making it an
indispensable addition to any philosophical and anthropological
library.

The past two years have seen signi?cant interest and progress made
in national and homeland security research in the areas of
information technologies, orga- zational studies, and
security-related public policy. Like medical and biological
research, which is facing signi?cant information overload and yet
also trem- dous opportunities for new innovation, the communities
of law enforcement, criminal analysis, and intelligence are facing
the same challenge. As medical - formatics and bioinformatics have
become major ?elds of study, the science of intelligence and
security informatics is now emerging and attracting interest from
academic researchers in related ?elds as well as practitioners from
both government agencies and industry. Broadly de?ned, intelligence
and security informatics is the study of the -
velopmentanduseofadvancedinformationtechnologiesandsystemsfornational
and homeland security related applications, through an integrated
technological, organizational, and policy based approach. The First
Symposium on Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI2003) was
held in June 2003 in Tucson, Arizona. It provided a stimulating
intellectual forum of discussions among previously d-
paratecommunities: academicresearchersininformationtechnologies,
computer science, public policy, and social studies; local, state,
and federal law enfor- ment and intelligence experts; and
information technology industry consultants and practitioners.
Building on the momentum of ISI2003, we held the Second Symposium
on IntelligenceandSecurityInformatics(ISI2004)inJune2004inTucson,

A leading British composer of the twentieth-century, Ralph Vaughan
Williams was a lifelong exponent of choral music and singing. This
two-part collection of new arrangements and editions features
well-loved and lesser-known Vaughan Williams songs, anthems, and
carols - for today's mixed-voice choir. It presents unison or
treble pieces scored for SATB, creating new repertoire, and
provides new accompaniment options and durations that widen the
appeal of the pieces for church or concert use. The adaptations may
introduce or give new light to the repertoire, yet are
complementary to the original settings published as single pieces.
John Leavitt, being an experienced conductor, composer, editor, and
champion of Vaughan Williams, brings great sensitivity to this
process, and knows how best to maximize rehearsal time with choirs
of various types and sizes.

There are more than six thousand human languages, each one unique.
For the last five hundred years, people have argued about how
important language differences are. This book traces that history
and shows how language differences have generally been treated
either as of no importance or as all-important, depending on
broader approaches taken to human life and knowledge. It was only
in the twentieth century, in the work of Franz Boas and his
students, that an attempt was made to engage seriously with the
reality of language specificities. Since the 1950s, this work has
been largely presented as yet another claim that language
differences are all-important by cognitive scientists and
philosophers who believe that such differences are of no
importance. This book seeks to correct this misrepresentation and
point to the new directions taken by the Boasians, directions now
being recovered in the most recent work in psychology and
linguistics.
