The magnificent land of Oz, a land of mysticism and wonderment.
Decades ago the world learned the infamous story of Dorothy Gale
and her adventures in Oz. The world read in anticipation of her
fight against the wicked and fell in love with the friends she made
along the way. Dorothy is no longer that same little girl from
Kansas. The innocence of her childhood is gone, and her most
dangerous adventures in Oz are only just beginning. What should
have been the picture perfect fairy tale ending is turning into a
bloody nightmare as Dorothy fights to understand who she can trust
and does whatever she can in order to save her beloved Oz. Death is
only the beginning because Oz will fall.
How homosexuality was viewed a hundred years ago and how it is seen
today are undoubtedly very different. John Malone looks back on
this section of history not to merely summarise events but to
analyse the influences they have had in shaping the gay movement
that exists today and how that movement will be defined in the
future. This book addresses the present state of gay culture and
what is coming in the new century. Among the points discussed, the
most important are: gay separatism vs. the gay mainstream; same-sex
marriage and adoption; the continuing role of homophobia in
America; the changing impact of HIV/AIDS; and, the politics of
homosexuality. This book is about how the many-faceted
relationships between gay people and the mainstream are evolving
and how they may play out in the challenging years directly ahead.
A LIVELY EXPLORATION OF THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS IN SCIENCE How Did the Universe Begin? The Big Bang has been the accepted theory for decades, but does it explain everything? How Did Life on Earth Get Started? What triggered the cell division that started the evolutionary chain? Did life come from outer space, buried in a chunk of rock? What is Gravity? Newton’s apple just got the arguments started, Einstein made things more complicated. Just how does gravity fit in with quantum theory? What Is the Inside of the Earth Like? What exactly is happening beneath our feet, and can we learn enough to help predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? How Do We Learn Language? Is language acquisition an inborn biological ability, or does every child have to start from scratch? Is There a Missing Link? The story of human evolution is not complete. In addition to hoaxes such as "Piltdown Man" and extraordinary finds such as "Lucy," many puzzles remain. What, in the end, do we mean by a "missing link"?

A fast-moving tale of life on the river...This is the story of Tom
and Roxa Malone, who lived and loved in the Ohio River Valley many
years ago. The story starts as the Confederate Army crosses the
Potomac in September, 1862, invading the North. Tom tries to run
away from his strict Irish immigrant parents to enlist in the
Pennsylvania Volunteers but is rejected because he is too young and
receives a beating when he returns home to his parents. Two years
later he finally breaks away from his overbearing parents and goes
to work as a deckhand on the towboat Shark, beginning a series of
adventures and narrow escapes in both war and peace. The annual
rise and fall of the Ohio River begins to dominate Tom's life as he
searches for his dream, finding happiness at last with his beloved
Roxa. But he is not yet free of the bonds that still tie him to his
family and to his Catholic faith...Based on a true story, this
little book is full of fascinating real-life characters,
traditions, places and events.
In 1837 a young couple meet and fall in love on the shores of
beautiful Lough Ramor in south-eastern County Cavan, Ireland. They
survive poverty, hunger, natural disaster, and the loss of parents,
holding on to their common dream of emigration to a new and better
life in America. They leave Ireland as newlyweds just three years
before the Famine. After an incredible early Steam Age odyssey
through Dublin, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Wheeling,
they arrive in the summer of 1842 in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, on
the National Road.
Born in the remote Cavan townland of Knockaraheen in 1819, Jack
Malone, the author's great-great-grandfather, first met his wife,
Margaret Burns of Cleggan, as a passenger on the little ferry he
and his father operated across the lake. After a long, difficult
courtship, they finally married and said farewell forever to
poverty-stricken rural Ireland. Based on a true story, this little
book is full of fascinating real-life characters, traditions,
places and events. It transports the reader back in time to a
carefully researched early 19th century setting, spanning both
Ireland and America.
