Writing the Frontier: Anthony Trollope between Britain and Ireland is the first book-length study of the great Victorian novelist's relationship with Ireland, the country which became his second home and was the location of his first personal and professional success. It offers an in-depth exploration of Trollope's time in Ireland as a rising Post Office official, contextualising his considerable output of Irish novels and short stories and his ongoing interest in the country, its people, and its always complicated relationship with Britain. Trollope's Irish novels were long neglected but are vital to any understanding of his entire oeuvre and when given their just place alter our overall view of the writer and his take on the world. Uniquely among his fellow English novelists, Trollope consciously occupied a mediating position, believing he knew Ireland better than any other Englishman and better than most Irishmen and used his novels to represent that Ireland to an English public. Trollope's Irish works constitute a vital and distinct group of works, add significantly to our vision of the writer, change the prevalent view that he is always safe and "English ", and represent a rich and underestimated contribution to the canon of the nineteenth century Irish novel tout court, complicating the sometimes arbitrary divisions that are drawn between the English and the Irish traditions.

The volume begins with a chronology of Joyce's publishing history, an analysis of his various biographies and a study of his many published and unpublished letters. It goes on to examine how his works were received in the main twentieth-century critical and theoretical schools. Most importantly, it places Joyce within multiple Irish, British and European contexts, providing a lively sense of the varied and changing world in which he lived, which formed him, and from which he wrote. This book focuses on Joyce's interest and involvement in early modern cinema and his subsequent thematic and formal borrowing for this genre; It will look at cinema's interest in Joyce as seen in important film versions of his work. It will bring together leading Joyce and film studies scholars. The first section of the book concentrates on Joyce's work on the Volta cinema, the first specifically-designated cinematic space opened in Dublin. The accounts in this section consider the historical details of the rise and fall of the cinema over the period in which it was established until Joyce left the project. This part of the book provides a useful context for what follows in the chapters that favour textual analysis. In tracing the aesthetic and structural links, the book offers chapters that span the history of cinema, including textual analysis that moves from examples of the work of the Lumiere brothers, to contemporary films such as American Beauty (Mendes, 1999) and The Departed (Scorsese, 2006). For the most part Ulysses is the preferred text, but stories from Dubliners, as well as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake also provide points of reference.
