It's the year 2520, a time of great importance, as the world's population anticipates the return of Halley's Comet. Beginning at the Park Avenue Amory Antiques show in New York City, and ending at the Hamptons Summer Classic on Long Island, Antique Showtime traces the antics and adventures of a group of antique dealers navigating their way through an increasingly uncertain world. John Meyer, a 25 year veteran of the antique business, offers an incredibly insightful, yet humorous, account of the trade. On top of that, he weaves in a murder mystery, a love story and philosophical Taoist musings. Despite the futuristic setting, Meyer shows that human nature remains the same throughout the ages. Anyone who has ever visited an antique show, or better yet worked at one, will revel in the novel's hilariously eccentric characters and situations, For those who haven't, let John Meyer be your insider guide to the weird and wild world of the antique-show business.
First published in 1992, this book presents unique quantitative data on the content coverage of primary education in a large number of countries since 1920. It demonstrates that these curricular outlines tend to be surprisingly similar across very disparate countries, and suggests the world processes that produced this result. Specifically, the study shows that the contemporary primary curriculum dates from changes in the late nineteenth century; that there has been a general shift towards a 'social studies' subject; that instruction in mathematics and sciences has tended to expand; that there have been substantial increases in foreign language instruction (and changes in the languages taught); and that instruction in the arts and physical education come to the standard world education model much later than other subjects. This work will be of particular interest to those studying primary curriculum, international education and the sociology of education.
The relationship between American Indians and the U.S. political system is both vitally important and unique. Yet American Indians--as individuals and as tribal nations--typically receive scant attention in introductory courses on American government and politics. This is the only reader on Native America and U.S. politics designed to be incorporated into introductory government courses. It will help students to obtain a clearer understanding of such contemporary issues as Indian fishing rights and gaming casinos and to see topics central to the course--the Constitution, the structure of federalism, citizenship, and civil liberties--from the perspective of groups that have often sought a protected place outside the U.S. polity rather than inclusion within. Enabling students to compare the American Indian experience with the ideas presented in other course materials, the readings in this book are keyed to the topics most commonly found in the course syllabi. Selected for their insight and accessibility as well as diversity of viewpoints and topics, the essays provide a unique insight into the character of the American political system from the perspective of American Indians, teaching the reader much about both the tribes and the character of politics and government in the U.S. generally.
This comprehensive and well-documented volume analyzes the policy-making and codification of the airline deregulation process through the 1960s and 1970s and examines the early effects of deregulation. It offers the industry both an historical perspective and a foundation for projecting future developments.

With the economic crisis that began in 2008, a long-standing trend toward increased regulation is becoming a flood. The clamor for improved enterprise risk management and the complexity of multinational compliance present executives with a dramatically new array of challenges. Governance should offer solutions, but it is clear that yesterday's governance practices aren't up to the task. In both design and implementation, they are too disconnected and incomplete to fully address our complex compliance and risk management puzzle. Executives get only fragmented views of their true business performance, and inefficiencies drive up costs. The consequences of inadequate governance were demonstrated in the economic meltdown of 2008. As the world struggles to recover from that crisis, business is now faced with a confusing array of evolving regulations, the challenge of managing compliance across multinational organizations and a new imperative for risk management that is coordinated across the enterprise. It's clear that yesterday's governance practices don't meet today's need for centralized controls, integrated compliance and risk management and greater transparency. The need for organizations to changeand change nowis clear. Under Control captures decades of business governance experience from many of the leading authorities at CA, Inc. This book sets out not only to explain the essential challenges of effective business governance, but to help you build solutions for your organization based on lessons learned at CA from its customers and in its own corporate structure. From governing the organization's policies as a whole instead of in silos, to a department-by-department look at the role and impact of governance, to governing your green initiatives, to the role of the board of directors, to the importance of risk management, this book lays out some of the strategies and processes that may help your organization manage its risk and regulatory requirements. It is clear that the governance standards in the past were inadequate, and that risks have not been properly assessed or understood. This book is a first step in solving this problem so that your organization is prepared and able to respond and thrive in today's rapidly evolving environment. Under Control is the first book published in the new CAPress imprint, a joint publishing program between Apress and CA Inc. One of the defining factors of the first decade of the 21st century has been the increase of regulation and governance. To explain these trends, and the various best practices for ensuring governance, enterprise IT management solutions provider CA Inc. enlisted more than a dozen subject matter experts from its ranks to contribute content. The resulting book explores the need for broad governance, different areas where governance is important, and various ways for organizations to manage and implement compliance, including IT governance, project portfolio management, information governance and sustainability management. The book, while largely vendor-neutral, draws on CA's experience creating governance solutions as well as managing its own governance issues. I wrote this book to help others find a job. I am not going to try to out-intellectualize you - I mean outsmart you. I just want to show you a nice little road map covering all the bases within the employment process. From cradle to grave. I hate that term. Anyway, this road map will be what you will need to do, step by step, to put yourself into the best position to get the career you wish to pursue. These ideas come from a recruiter's perspective. I have spent time in staffing and in human resources both as a contractor and permanent employee and learned a lot. The thing I learned most from the inside is what hiring managers are thinking. What they are looking for in a candidate and, more specifically, what they're not. From what types of resumes are being looked at these days - and, yes, there are ways to easily get yours thrown into the trash, even if you have the skills, if you don't present them properly - to recruiter blacklists that can permanently take you out of the entire recruiting process for companies you may be targeting. Some of the topics I cover may inspire additional research on your end. That would be nice. Some might lead to an entirely new way of setting priorities, developing and managing your schedule, making task lists and networking full time. That would be the goal. Some of this information may build you an entirely new perspective on your life. That would be flattering. I'm not going to change your entire life with this book, as some career experts preach. I mean I will still be giving it a sincere chance. Piggybacking (I hate that term) off that second notion, the goal is to recreate your way of living, because some of you might not know exactly what to do each day when 'you're not being told by some superior. Some of you are already taskmasters and already organize your daily routine on your calendars. That's half the battle. To those folks, this book will help with suggestions about what to plug into that eight hour day. Enough with all these "I's" now. Let's 'get to you. This book isn't going to do the job for you. Like a screenplay, you have to find the right spot to begin your tale. Where in your life do we start? Some of you might be employed, pro-active job-seekers. Some of you might have just receiving their first pink slip after working at the same company for the last 30 years and can't face retirement yet. Let's cover everything.
This book is the author's summary of his 22 years of research to explore why people go through crises. It zeroes in on divorce because that is what this author went through twice but, pertains to most crises. It is a self-help counseling book. It helps people go to the roots of their problem(s) to get to a solution much quicker. It does not take months to get to a solution but usually only a few hours or a few days. Most problems have a spiritual base so that needs to be addressed to get to the solution. The book has over 70 references because the author realizes that many people have written books that contain helpful information. The author acknowledges that most people don't want to take only one author's opinion that his suggestion(s) are the right way to go. You will find multiple references to back up his suggestions. The end result is perfect peace which many people are looking for today, inner healing, physical healing, spiritual cleansing of our residence, a filter to know what things get us into trouble with crises, prayers for children in trouble and a savings of time in hunting for solutions to life's problems. By knowing a "forbidden" list of doorways we stay on the least painful road in life. The biggest help in the book is if you have opened some wrong spiritual doorways in life it helps you walk back out of those doorways. Sometimes those doorways can be inter-generational which means you did not open the spiritual doorway(s) but your ancestors did. The theme in the book is spiritual ignorance gets people into trouble.
This chilling thriller tells the story of a young girl thrown into the mysteriously terrifying world of voodoo against her own will and the life-threatening, dauntless tasks needed to save her, no matter the cost. Caught in a frightening maze of cabalistic rites and wanton sex, her body and soul are owned by her mother, and her mind and emotions are no longer her own. Her father would destroy himself to save her, yet she is no longer a child at all, but a creature of evil, hurled into the horrifying realm of the devil himself.
