Crime Prevention and Community Safety - New Directions (Hardcover): Gordon Hughes, Eugene McLaughlin, John Muncie Crime Prevention and Community Safety - New Directions (Hardcover)
Gordon Hughes, Eugene McLaughlin, John Muncie
R4,768 Discovery Miles 47 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

`This text represents a major contribution to the literature on crime prevention and community safety. It goes beyond existing literature in bringing together sophisticated theoretical analysis on these topics which are core issues for government at local as well as national levels. And it also brings a much needed international perspective to our understanding of the local governance of crime' - Kevin Stenson, Professor of Criminology, Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College

Crime Prevention and Community Safety provides an essential introduction to the complex issues and debates in the field of crime control and the new politics of safety and security across the globe. Collectively the contributions to this volume present a critique of current policy and open up the field of study to new directions.

While engaging with the dominant focus on `what works' in crime reduction and community safety, the book also moves beyond the traditionally narrow, technical boundaries of much previous debate.

Crime Prevention and Community Safety: New Directions looks at:

-The relationship between crime control, communities and the nation state;

-The diverse and changing sites of conflict, compromise and collusion around crime control policies;

-Wider issues relating to `risk', 'safety' and `security'.

The central feature of the volume as a whole is a commitment to exploring new directions for research and analysis, theoretically, empirically and comparatively. In opening up the varying and volatile spaces for crime prevention and community safety within the more general politics of social order, the book provides a critical rethinking of traditional connections between criminology, social policy and politics.

Crime Prevention and Community Safety will be essential reading for students of criminology, criminal justice, community safety, socio-legal studies, sociology of crime and deviance and social policy.

This is a course Reader for The Open University course D863 Community Safety, Crime Prevention and Social Control

The Problem of Crime (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): John Muncie, Eugene McLaughlin The Problem of Crime (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
John Muncie, Eugene McLaughlin
R3,985 Discovery Miles 39 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Praise for the First Edition: `By providing accessible and readable introductions to often neglected aspects of crime, the volume is a welcome change from texts focusing on the more conventionally constructed problems of juvenile crime, theft and violent crime' - Reviewing Sociology This second edition of The Problem of Crime offers a comprehensive analysis of some of the most important developments in the study of crime. The book considers how the criminological gaze has shifted its focus from a preoccupation with 'crimes of the streets' to examining also the serious social harms and injuries associated with crime in the city, child abuse, domestic violence, organized crime, corporate crime, political violence, hate crime and crimes of the state. The book also emphasizes the necessity of studying the staging and representation of crime in the news media and popular culture. In doing so The Problem of Crime highlights the ways that criminologists are currently challenging and reformulating the concept of crime. Drawing on a wide range of explanatory and illustrative material, the contributors interrogate the proposition that there are universally agreed conceptions of what constitutes the crime problem. A persistent and widespread public concern with crime suggests that everyone knows what it is. However, each chapter in this book shows that 'crime' carries a range of meanings and understandings that are open to disputation, and which shift historically and culturally. Ranging over a wide variety of issues, this fully revised and updated edition will be essential reading for students of criminology, criminal justice, socio-legal studies, social policy and sociology, and also for readers with a general interest in crime. The Problem of Crime is a course text for the Open University course, Crime, Order and Social Control (D315).

Criminal Justice - Local and Global (Paperback, New): Deborah Drake, John Muncie, Louise Westmarland Criminal Justice - Local and Global (Paperback, New)
Deborah Drake, John Muncie, Louise Westmarland
R1,188 Discovery Miles 11 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Criminal Justice: Local and Global and its sister text Crime: Local and Global are two new teaching texts that aim to equip the reader with a critical understanding of the globally contested nature of 'crime' and'justice'. Through an examination of key concepts and criminological approaches, the books illuminate the different ways in which crime is constructed, conceived and controlled. International case studies are used to demonstrate how 'crime' and 'justice' are historically and geographically located in terms of the global/local context, and how processes of criminalisation and punishment are mediated in contemporary societies.

Criminal Justice: Local and Global covers the way the 'local' can be widened out to look at international, transnational and supranational aspects of justice. This means that issues such as corporate crime and human rights can be discussed in a comparative and critical way, examining the possibility, for example of an International Criminal Court, cross-national jurisdictions of regulation and control (such as Interpol) and so on. Each chapter covers a different area of regulation, punishment and process.

Unlike previous texts, the book's approach will be an innovative approach to widen 'justice' to encompass considerations beyond simple, local jurisdictions. The book will take instances of 'justice' in one jurisdiction and use global examples to illustrate how ambiguous the concept of 'justice' can be.

Each crime or area of activity selected within this text has a global reach, and is made ever more possible due to the way globalisation has opened up markets, both legitimate and illegitimate.
The book's approach and scope emphasises that we can no longer view 'crime' as something which occurs within certain jurisdictions, at certain times and in particular places. For example, the chapter on cybercrime highlights the 'illegal' acts that can be perpetrated by second lifers, anywhere in the world, but are they a crime?

`Provide[s] a good overview of current family theory and research.... well written and worth having' - British Journal of Medical Psychology `Altogether an excellent collection for students of social policy, social care or social work, covering as it does both subjective and objective features of family life and the logics of inequality within which they are embedded' - Child and Family Social Work This revised and updated introductory text presents an accessible, interdisciplinary account of how 'the family' is constituted in the 'public' and 'private' spheres. Drawing in a wide range of theoretical perspectives from sociology, social policy, psychology and psychoanalysis, this book critically examines assumptions about 'the family' that are embedded in social policy, law and political discourse. The text outlines the tensions that exist between such assumptions and the lived realities and everyday experiences of family life. Understanding the Family shows how dominant understanding of the family have failed to recognize a marked diversity of family forms in contemporary society, and also ignore the complex and myriad ways in which family life comes to be experienced.

Comparative Youth Justice will be of interest to all criminologists concerned with comparative penal policy and will be essential to all scholars of youth justice' - Professor Tim Newburn, London School of Economics and Political Science and President of the British Society of Criminology 'Comparative Youth Justice is what we need in an era of hardening social policies and irresponsible political demagoguery: thoughtful critiques, comparative analysis, and a commitment to the rights of youth.
