This is a biography of 'England's greatest medieval scientist, a man who solved major practical and theoretical problems to build an extraordinary and pioneering astronomical and astrological clock'. John North tells an extraordinary story here; Richard of Wallingford (1292-1336) was the son of a blacksmith who became Abbot of St Albans, where he invented his clock, before finally succumbing to leprosy. The story of the invention of the clock and its science, is accompanied by a fascinating discussion of early 14th-century scientific endeavour, which examines the Oxford that Richard knew from his studies there, and how science and theology merged in the minds of medieval intellectuals. John North examines Richard's career at the great abbey of St Albans as well as its people and, in particular, its mills. Half of the study, however, focuses on the clock and its principles. North looks at the history of horologia , the sources, and Richard's own manual which North identified in the Bodleian Library in the 1960s. Finally, North discusses the history of astronomy and natural philosophy, the instruments used and the enormous legacy that Richard left even though so few have heard his name today. This is an excellent book, with fine illustrations throughout.

The religious life within and around the Roman Empire, and the context into which Christianity emerged and where it spread, provides a topic of the widest interest. Yet this context was not that of a completely pagan world, for Judaism was already firmly established and continued as a vigorous contender in the field throughout the first four centuries after the death of Christ - a fact not always well recognized. Ovid was the most influential and widely imitated of all classical Latin poets. This volume publishes papers delivered at a conference on the Reception of Ovid in March 2013, jointly organised by the Institute of Classical Studies and the Warburg Institute, University of London. For some time interest has been growing in a dialogue between modern scientific research into human cognition and research in the humanities. This ground-breaking volume focuses this dialogue on the religious experience of men and women in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Each chapter examines a particular historical problem arising from an ancient religious activity and the contributions range across a wide variety of both ancient contexts and sources, exploring and integrating literary, epigraphic, visual and archaeological evidence. In order to avoid a simple polarity between physical aspects (ritual) and mental aspects (belief) of religion, the contributors draw on theories of cognition as embodied, emergent, enactive and extended, accepting the complexity, multimodality and multicausality of human life. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the chapters open up new questions around and develop new insights into the physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of ancient religions.

Plutarch's writings have had a varied reception history from when he was writing in the second century BCE down to today. This volume starts from what may be a translation into the Syriac dialect of a lost Plutarch essay; continues with a tribute from a leading scholar of the later Byzantine period; and follows the centuries of sustained enthusiasm from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. This period started once a translation into Latin had become available, and ended when scholars in the nineteenth century lowered Plutarch's reputation as historian, biographer, philosopher, and stylist. By the end of the century, he came to symbolize in the eyes of Tolstoy precisely what history should not be. Both the causes of the decline and the later recovery of interest raise important new questions about how Plutarch should be assessed in the twenty-first century. This is one of the early volumes in the series of `Afterlives' of the Classics, being produced jointly by the Institute of Classical Studies and the Warburg.

Virgil has always been copied, studied, imitated, and revered as perhaps the greatest poet of the Latin language. He has been centrally important to the transmission of the classical tradition, and has played a unique role in European education. The book examines the cultural, historical, and rhetorical functions of forgery that extend beyond the desire to deceive and profit.
