From Savages to Yorkers, to the surprise attack on Ft. Ticonderoga,
to America's first Navy and its ambush of the mighty British Fleet
at the Battle of Lake Champlain at Valcour Island, to the defeat of
British outside Bennington and finally the turning point of the
Revolutionary War, the decisive battle of Saratoga. Our history
books go into great detail about the Thirteen Colonies and how they
declared their independence and referred to themselves as the
United States of America on July 4, 1776. The battles generated
many new hero's that are either obscure, condemned or not mentioned
at all in our history books probably because Vermont was not a
state in 1776. This book is about Ethan Allen and the Green
Mountain Boys and their quest to make Vermont the Fourteenth State.
CALIFORNIA, The First 100 Years. 1769 - 1869. Spain wanted a
military presence in California to keep out the English, French and
Russians all of whom were beginning to pose threats to Spain's
expansion to uncivilized California. Four Spanish Exhibitions, left
New Spain (today's Mexico) in 1769, two by land and two by sea
bound for San Diego. More than one third participating lost their
lives on these expeditions due to scurvy and starvation. The
survivors were expected to meet in San Diego to create Missions
(education centers) and Presidios (Forts) to civilize the Indians
at both San Diego and Monterey. Travel to California for the next
100 years by land or by sea was a high risk, dangerous trip for
anyone. Indians attacked the settlers who crossed the plains with
covered wagons. Weather and the severe elements took many more
lives in the hot deserts and freezing High Sierras. California's
First 100 Civilized Years were governed by Spain, then Mexico and
finally The United States climaxing with Statehood as our Nations
31st State, the Gold Rush and the Golden Spike.

With his passport confiscated by the Russian Government and owing
creditors in both Russia and Germany RICHARD WAGNER with his wife
MINNA head for the Russian Border in an attempt to reach France to
have his first opera produced. The plan is to escape from Russia to
Germany where he is also a wanted man and secretly board a ship
bound for England then cross the channel to France where he hopes
to have his traditional opera Rienzi produced. Shortly thereafter a
major breakthrough occurs as his second opera influenced by his
daring escape by sea, Flying Dutchman is a great success in Germany
and Wagner becomes famous. Getting involved in a revolution to
overthrow the Monarchy was Wagner's big downfall. He barely escapes
capture for treason and moves to Switzerland in exile. While in
exile in Zurich, Wagner writes an opera about the German Teutonic
hero LOHENGRIN, who arrives with a SWAN towing his boat to save a
woman accused of witchcraft. . Prince LUDWIG of Bavaria at age 15
is fascinated by the swan in the Lohengrin Opera. He asks his
governess for the libretti of Wagner's Operas. Years go by in exile
and Wagner becomes completely destitute with creditors again
chasing him. He longs for his homeland Germany, his love life is in
shambles and he lives in hiding. King Max of Bavaria dies and his
now19 year old son Crown Prince Ludwig II becomes King of Bavaria.
Within 14 days, he summons Richard Wagner to the Palace. King
Ludwig II befriends Richard Wagner and lets him know he will never
have to worry about money again. He encourages Richard to work on
The Ring Cycle, a four Opera drama to be performed in a Theatre
built to Wagner's own specifications.
Home at last together to our la Jolla, CA oceanfront apartment
where we can sleep tonight to the sound of the surf pounding
against our front deck. In early January, Debbie and I were invited
for a weekend at Sands Resort in Las Vegas by my father and mother.
As we walked in Debbie asked, is that your mother over there in a
crowd of people, I said, "Yes, how did you know." "She looks like
you" was her reply. My mom Alberta Roach loved to entertain guests
at her home in New Jersey and immediately welcomed Debbie into the
Roach family. The two of them were inseperable the entire weekend.
Alberta would become Debbie's new mother as they both had the same
sense of humor and desire to perfect the art of entertaining. Dad
and I watched play-off football while the two women enjoyed each
others company. Alberta and Debbie became friends for life. It was
a sad day for both of us when they imploded the Sands Resort in Las
Vegas, because we all had fond memories of Debbie's first meeting
with my parents and her being so warmly welcomed into the Roach
family. Back in La Jolla Debbie let my son Michael know that she
would cook him anything he wanted at least once a week, so every
Friday night Mike was there for dinner, which further sharpened
Debbie's culinary skills. A giant of a man moved in next door, his
name is Duncan Edwards and is a good friend to this day. Duncan was
the tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers right up to the year of
the start of the Pittsburgh dynasty. Duncan could smell Debbie's
cooking and often invited himself to dinner. During these years
Duncan became construction superintendent of Barona Casino, one of
San Diego's first casinos. Debbie and I saw the birth of San
Diego's Indian Casino Industry with intimate detail through our pal
Duncan. Duncan, like my son also became a regular invitee to
Debbie's experimental cooking. Debbie and I had season tickets to
the San Diego Opera, San Diego Chargers and San Diego Padres and
occasional tickets to San Diego Symphony, so between her cooking
and all this activity she was a very busy lady. After two years of
ocean front living Debbie starting getting ear infections, the
doctor claimed it was common for people living too close to the
ocean, so we moved to a four bedroom home near the top of Mt.
Soledad in La Jolla. From ocean front to mountain top with a much
larger kitchen and huge deck with a hot tub overlooking the
Pacific.
