This book provides an overdue critical re-engagement with the analytical approach exemplified by the work of Harold Wolpe, who was a key theorist within the liberation movement. It probes the following broad questions: how do we understand the trajectory of the post-apartheid period, how did the current situation come about
in the transformation, how does the current situation relate to how a post-apartheid society was conceived in anticipation, and what are the implications of what have been failed ambitions for progressives?
The contributions to this volume cohere around the following themes: labour and capital in post-apartheid South Africa, the post-apartheid South African economy, the state and transformation of South African society, and social policy in post-apartheid South Africa. The aim is not to provide a common or coherent theoretical
perspective, but rather to probe a core problematic and set of theoretical concerns.
The contributing authors explore not only historical and contemporary specifics, but deploy and reflect on theoretical tools that allow us to make sense of those specifics and to engage with the dynamics of race and class, and the form and functioning of the state, including its articulation with an increasingly financialised form of global capitalism.

This book addresses the themes of praxis and the role of
international lawyers as intellectuals and political actors
engaging with questions of justice for Third World peoples. The
book brings together 12 contributions from a total of 15 scholars
working in the TWAIL (Third World Approaches to International Law)
network or tradition. It includes chapters from some of the
pioneering Third World jurists who have led this field since the
time of decolonization, as well as prominent emerging scholars in
the field. Broadly, the TWAIL orientation understands praxis as the
relationship between what we say as scholars and what we do - as
the inextricability of theory from lived experience. Understood in
this way, praxis is central to TWAIL, as TWAIL scholars strive to
reconcile international law's promise of justice with the
proliferation of injustice in the world it purports to govern.
Reconciliation occurs in the realm of praxis and TWAIL scholars
engage in a variety of struggles, including those for greater
self-awareness, disciplinary upheaval, and institutional resistance
and transformation. The rich diversity of contributions in the book
engage these themes and questions through the various prisms of
international institutional engagement, world trade and investment
law, critical comparative law, Palestine solidarity and
decolonization, judicial education, revolutionary struggle against
imperial sovereignty, Muslim Marxism, Third World intellectual
traditions, Global South constitutionalism, and migration. This
book was originally published as a special issue of Third World
Quarterly.

Architects today incorporate principles of sustainable design as a
matter of necessity. But the challenge of unifying climate control
and building functionality, of securing a managed environment
within a natural setting--and combating the harsh forces of wind,
water, and sun--presented a new set of obstacles to architects and
engineers in the mid-twentieth century. First published in 1963,
Design with Climate was one of the most pioneering books in the
field and remains an important reference for practitioners,
teachers, and students, over fifty years later. In this book,
Victor Olgyay explores the impact of climate on shelter design,
identifying four distinct climatic regions and explaining the
effect of each on orientation, air movement, site, and materials.
He derives principles from biology, engineering, meteorology, and
physics, and demonstrates how an analytical approach to climate
management can merge into a harmonious and aesthetically sound
design concept. This updated edition contains four new essays that
provide unique insights on issues of climate design, showing how
Olgyay's concepts work in contemporary practice. Ken Yeang, John
Reynolds, Victor W. Olgyay, and Donlyn Lyndon explore bioclimatic
design, eco design, and rational regionalism, while paying homage
to Olgyay's impressive groundwork and contributions to the field of
architecture.
In the aftermath of the 1916 Rising, the ensuing guerrilla war
reached its peak in August 1920, in the garrison town of
Templemore, when a series of extraordinary events occurred.
16-year-old farm labourer Jimmy Walsh claimed that he was
experiencing Marian apparitions, and that religious statues owned
by him were moving and bleeding. Miraculous cures were claimed and
the religious fervour that gripped Ireland led to an influx of
thousands of pilgrims. The phenomenon of the 'Templemore miracles'
or 'bleeding statues' lasted for several weeks and an informal
ceasefire arose while the rebels, the police, military and civilian
population struggled to comprehend the surreal situation. With the
logistics of conducting the war disrupted by the flood of pilgrims,
the IRA stepped in. They interrogated Walsh and, with the direct
involvement of Michael Collins, planned to deter further
pilgrimages to Templemore. In due course, Walsh had left Ireland,
never to return, and the war resumed with an even greater degree of
ferocity. Here, John Reynolds charts the bizarre goings-on that
intersected the spiritual, social and martial fixations of early
twentieth-century Ireland based around a small town and a boy with
visions.
