‘Didn’t I tell you they were only windmills? And only someone with windmills on the brain could have failed to see that!’

Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the aging Quixote’s fancy leads them wildly astray. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety. Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature its disordered protagonist is obsessed with.

John Rutherford’s landmark translation does full justice to the energy and wit of Cervantes’s prose. His introduction discusses the traditional works parodied in Don Quixote, as well as issues surrounding literary translation.

Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the aging Quixote's fancy leads them wildly astray, tilting at windmills, fighting with friars, and distorting the rural Spanish landscape into a fantasy of impenetrable fortresses and wicked sorcerers. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety. Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature its disordered protagonist is obsessed with.

The Modern Spanish Sonnet: John Rutherford The Modern Spanish Sonnet
John Rutherford
R2,005 Discovery Miles 20 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The fine tradition of the Spanish sonnet, developed during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the subject of Rutherford’s The Spanish Golden Age Sonnet (2016), has been extended and developed during the subsequent centuries. This book presents one hundred of the best sonnets of the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including sonnets written in the Catalan and Galician languages, together with their translations into modern English sonnets and a critical commentary on each. There is a general introduction to the genre, followed by summaries of the historical and literary backgrounds and a discussion of the problems facing the translator of sonnets. The life and works of each poet are summarised and a select bibliography of further reading concludes the volume. The translations bring these sonnets to new life in the modern English language, and they can be read both as interesting and lively poems in their own right and as leads into the originals.

The Spanish Ballad in the Golden Age (Hardcover): Nigel Griffin, Clive Griffin, Eric Southworth Colin Thompson The Spanish Ballad in the Golden Age (Hardcover)
Nigel Griffin, Clive Griffin, Eric Southworth Colin Thompson; Contributions by Clive Griffin, Colin Thompson, …
R2,186 Discovery Miles 21 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A guide to the interpretation of the Golden-Age ballad. Collections of traditional Spanish ballads were made in the early seventeenth century; some recorded directly from singers, others reworked by educated poets. So popular were these that Court poets composed ballads of their own. Most Spanish poetry of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries circulated in manuscript among a small coterie of wits and fellow poets, and it often contains references to contemporary events and people, sideswipes at institutionsand individuals, and allusions to other writings of the time. The modern reader has to know about the people and events criticized and lampooned, and everything from municipal by-laws to contemporary painting can prove helpful. The traditional popular associations of the ballad also led to many poets combining in their poems the language of the street alongside that of polite society and the schoolroom. This volume discusses some of the problems encountered by anglophone students and teachers of literature when they turn to the Golden-Age ballad and offers informed guidance on how such poems might be read. The nine poems discussed have been chosen with such difficulties in mind and a strophe-by-strophe prose translation is provided for each, followed by a detailed critical analysis. Edited by NIGEL GRIFFIN, CLIVE GRIFFIN, ERIC SOUTHWORTH and COLIN THOMPSON, all of Oxford University. OTHER CONTRIBUTORS: Oliver Noble-Wood, John Rutherford, Ronald Truman.

Protect, Befriend, Respect - Nova Scotia`s Mental Health Movement, 1908?2008 (Paperback): Judith Fingard, John Rutherford Protect, Befriend, Respect - Nova Scotia`s Mental Health Movement, 1908?2008 (Paperback)
Judith Fingard, John Rutherford
R497 Discovery Miles 4 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Tracing a century of its evolution, this chronicle outlines the mental health movement in Nova Scotia. Charting the Canadian Mental Health Association and its antecedent organizations, this account illustrates how these groups constituted a major force in the campaign to improve the prospects of people living with mental illness. The movement is depicted in three stages--from seeking to protect mentally compromised people, through befriending those struggling with mental disabilities and speaking out against discrimination, and finally, to advocating for the rights of consumers and respecting their need to speak on their own behalf. This journey through social policy focuses on those who fought institutionalization and indifference with compassion and dedication. The result is a history not only of a particular organization but also of a society's approach toward some of its most vulnerable constituents.

In writing the following pages it has been my purpose to give a picture of the Troubadours during the twelfth century, the period in which we find them in their prime. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
