Henry Martyn (1781-1812) was born in Cornwall and educated at
Cambridge. After hearing about the success of William Carey's
mission at Serampore, he abandoned his intended career as a
barrister to become a missionary, and joined the East India Company
as a chaplain. During six years spent mostly in India he produced
Hindi, Urdu and Persian translations of the New Testament. He is
best remembered for these and other scripture translations which
remained popular in India until the end of the nineteenth century.
This memoir draws on Martyn's personal letters and diary. It was
first published in London in 1816, soon after Martyn's untimely
death in Persia, and appeared in a second edition (reissued here)
in 1819. Part 1 covers his early life, Part 2 begins with his
arrival in India and describes his missionary work, and Part 3
recounts Martyn's exhausting journey to Persia and his death.
Papers from 14 of Japan's leading academic experts in geography
studies form the principal focus of this collection, unusual in the
fact that so wide a range of Japanese scholarship is available in
English. Some of the fields covered are historical geography,
contemporary economic geography, urban geography, theoretical and
physical geography and regional geography. The papers, edited for
publication, were presented at the first Anglo-Japanese
Geographical seminar, School of Oriental and African studies,
University of London, in 1989.
Born in Italy, trained in Paris and a resident of London, John
Singer Sargent (1856-1925) became Boston's favorite painter in the
1880s. His commissions from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to
decorate its new building's grand staircase and rotunda resulted in
one of Sargent's last and most ambitious works. Sargent regarded
the entire space as a giant canvas and brought together all the
pictorial, decorative and architectural elements with a painter's
skill and vision. This compact volume offers a guide to the murals
and their surroundings, elucidating their allegorical subjects
drawn from classical mythology to emphasize the museum's role as
the guardian of fine arts.
Take a peak behind the curtain of some of the biggest publishing
moments in the past several decades with forty-year industry
veteran John Sargent. Turning Pages: The Adventures and
Misadventures of a Publisher is the well-told story of forty
years in the publishing business. For twenty-four of those years,
John Sargent ran one of America’s largest publishing companies.
Rather than a straight chronological narrative, Sargent uses the
best stories of those years to give us an intimate look inside book
publishing. In weaving these stories together, he brings the reader
with him through triumph and despair, and a very interesting daily
life. The reader will meet his odd publishing family, his
interesting authors, and the celebrities with whom he worked.
Sargent tells the tale of publishing Monica Lewinsky and recounts
what it was like to have an author meeting in Buckingham Palace. He
takes the reader with him into the Macmillan battles with Amazon,
the Department of Justice, and President Donald Trump. In Turning
Pages, the reader will share his occasional pain and seemingly
endless joy, from a one room schoolhouse in Wyoming to the Nelson
Mandela Foundation in South Africa. Full of humour and grace, this
is a book for those who enjoy a good story about a fascinating
life. This behind-the-scenes look at some of the biggest moments in
publishing over the last several decades is a must-read for every
person who loves books and has always wondered about the industry
surrounding them.
