The rise of China has brought about a dramatic increase in the rate
of migration from mainland China. At the same time, the Chinese
government has embarked on a full-scale push for the
internationalisation of Chinese media and culture. Media and
communication have therefore become crucial factors in shaping the
increasingly fraught politics of transnational Chinese communities.
This book explores the changing nature of these communities, and
reveals their dynamic and complex relationship to the media in a
range of countries worldwide. Overall, the book highlights a number
of ways in which China's "going global" policy interacts with other
factors in significantly reshaping the content and contours of the
diasporic Chinese media landscape. In doing so, this book
constitutes a major rethinking of Chinese transnationalism in the
twenty-first century.
This book provides a thorough account of contemporary trends in
advertising and media industries. It examines the role of
advertising in the globalisation of consumer culture, taking an
empirical, region-by-region approach.
Advertising attracts much public criticism for the
commercialisation of culture and its apparent impact on social and
personal life. This book outlines and assesses the issues involved,
with regard to how they are manifested in different regional,
national and global contexts. Topics covered include:
- advertising as an object of study
- global trends in the advertising industry
- advertising and the media
- issues in advertising and society
- advertising, globalisation and world regions
While maintaining a contemporary focus, the book looks over the
whole of the 20th century as background to the globalisation of
what it calls the manufacturing-marketing-media complex. There is
specific emphasis on the 1980s, a crucial decade for advertising as
a global institution; the 1990s, as the decade which gave rise to
the discourse of globalisation; and the decade recently ended, as
the era of new media.
John Sinclair is one of the most influential figures in world
linguistics, an innovator who revolutionized the study of spoken
discourse and pioneered corpus-based research. In this definitive
collection, papers reflecting his most important work of the past
decade have been collated and organized into meaningful sections,
providing a clear statement of Sinclair's thinking and research.
Foundations oultines the major theoretical principles on which
subsequent chapters are constructed; The Organization of the Text
traces the development of Sinclair's insights into the relationship
between text structure and dialogue; Lexus and Grammar presents
core papers on the description of vocabulary, its relationship with
grammar and the role of corpus analysis in describing lexical
patterns. Featuring intorductions, summaries of key arguments and a
full annotated bibliography of Sinclair's publications, Trust the
Text is an essential addition to any linguist's bookshelf.

First published in 1972, 'Guitar Army' was the manifesto for a
generation of young, revved-up readers in a turbulent but
idealistic time of riots and wars, when some rockers posed with
guns and demanded freedom and social change.

Quarrying and all other branches of surface mining rather than
diminishing in importance have become of more and more consequence
economically, industrially and particularly with the depletion of
high-grade deep-mined mineral reserves. Low-grade minerals require
low cost extraction and this in many cases necessitates very
expensive mechanized equipment with the cost of individual units
running into millions of pounds in the case of large scale
operations with high productivity. There has been, and there still
is, a tendency for the smaller single quarries to be amalgamated
into groups with large financial resources and therefore with the
ability to purchase these expensive machines so necessary to make
operations viable. This in turn requires wider administrative and
technical knowledge in executives of these groups and as these
often handle a wide range of products from widely differing systems
of working, this technical knowledge should embrace the
exploitation of many different types of deposits. There is, at
present, a great dearth throughout the world of such qualified
executives as is apparent from advertisements of vacancies in the
technical press. It would appear that these industries offer an
attractive career to the widely qualified and experienced
technologist in these fields. This book deals with methods of
working in the surface extractive indus tries, quarry management
and power supply-but does not deal with related ancillary processes
except where these affect quarrying operations.
John Sinclair and a panel of expert investigators present a
comprehensive collection of cellular and molecular techniques for
the analysis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) biology and its pathogenetic
mechanisms. The methods-all described in step-by-step detail with
ready reproducibility in mind-range from basic virus culture to
complex molecular analysis of CMV structure and function. Included
are methods for CMV detection using both immunological and
biological techniques, methods for analyzing fundamental aspects of
the CMV infection cycle, and methods for analyzing T cell response
to cytomegalovirus infection in the human host. Comprehensive and
state-of-the-art, Cytomegalovirus Protocols provides investigators
with a collection of the key methods that are illuminating not only
the basic biology of this complex and intriguing human herpesvirus,
but also its significant role in human infectious diseases and
their emergent therapies.
