John Stirling followed his parent's footsteps into a theatrical career while he was still in short trousers. He became a successful child actor on TV and radio in the golden days of the 1950s and 60s before embarking on a varied and colourful career backstage, and sometimes upon it. As a producer or stage manager, John has worked with everyone from Bob Monkhouse and Morecambe and Wise to the Beatles, Billy Fury, Marti Caine and Mark Knopfler, and put on variety shows for good causes in the country's biggest theatres and concert halls. He has worked as a stage manager on "Coronation Street", talent-spotted for prime-time TV programmes such as "Royal Variety Show", "Game for a Laugh", "Surprise, Surprise" and created a new-look "Gang Show". John's life changed forever in 1989 when he and his wife Annie were moved by pity to rescue two abused and battered donkeys from a horse sale. John and Annie went on to create a sanctuary for the animals and others like them, which now, under the auspices of the Michael Elliott Trust, is home to the best part of two hundred donkeys. Since donkeys galloped into his life, John has directed all his show-business skills to raising money for his charges and for the Trust. In this he has enlisted the help of a galaxy of famous figures and personal friends, from Dame Judi Dench to Chris de Burgh and from June Brown, Rolf Harris and Pam Ayres to late Sir John Mills. He is able to count many of Britain's greatest stars of stage and screen as his friends. This book tells the story of John's life in the entertainment business, and of the events that led to his taking up the donkeys' cause.

Introducing Neuropsychology - 2nd Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): John Stirling, Rebecca Elliott Introducing Neuropsychology - 2nd Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
John Stirling, Rebecca Elliott
R1,463 Discovery Miles 14 630 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Introducing Neuropsychology, Second Edition investigates the functions of the brain and explores the relationships between brain systems and human behaviour. The material is presented in a jargon-free, easy to understand manner and aims to guide students new to the field through current areas of research. Following a brief history of the discipline and a description of methods in neuropsychology, the remaining chapters review traditional and recent research findings. Both cognitive and clinical aspects of neuropsychology are addressed to illustrate the advances scientists are making (on many fronts) in their quest to understand brain - behaviour relationships in both normal and disturbed functioning. The rapid developments in neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience resulting from traditional research methods as well as new brain-imaging techniques are presented in a clear and straightforward way. Each chapter has been fully revised and updated and new brain-imaging data are incorporated throughout, especially in the later chapters on Emotion and Motivation, and Executive Functions. As in the first edition, key topics are dealt with in separate focus boxes, and "interim comment" sections allow the reader a chance to "take stock" at regular intervals. The book assumes no particular expertise on the reader's part in either psychology or brain physiology. Thus, it will be of great interest not only to those studying neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, but also to medical and nursing students, and indeed anyone who is interested in learning about recent progress in understanding brain-behaviour relationships.

These matters are of importance to accept before handing the findings to more analytical minds, to read in the hope of presenting solutions. It was on the balcony at Hampton Court Palace that the work was done quietly, discreetly in what Thomas Wolsey referred to as 'The Silent Get Together'. Visually exciting, verbally incoherent and there for everyone to see - a unique format for success. Henry VIII would not allow freedom of speech. All discourse had to be in obeyance of an order, whether acceptable or not. Criticism was banished, suggestions discouraged or in most cases forbidden. Time allocated simply for acclamation and flattery. Henry's wealth was his comfort, ownership his power, dominance his acceptance, philanthropy his quest. The young king was renowned for revelling in undisputed control, an overriding criterion that painted his life colourful and entertaining. Exciting to a nation, his popularity gaining unequalled degrees of admiration. There is little doubt that Roux experienced the best years with the young Tudor King of England. A time of unprecedented wealth allowed for the conception of creative adventures, in turn generating larger than life characters. Fortunes were welcomed for extraordinary projects and designs, leaving a legacy of unsurpassed grandeur in which the next generation could delight.

Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Richard Cammack Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)

R3,154 Discovery Miles 31 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last few years, the language of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has expanded enormously to the extent that few scientists can expect to be familiar with all the terms and concepts. This is partly due the massive influence of the Genome and successive "-omics" projects which have developed in to many new areas of research. At the same time, terms from other subject areas - including mathematics, statistics, physics and other life sciences - appear increasingly in the biochemical literature. The Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provides a comprehensive and 'encyclopaedic' survey of modern biochemistry and molecular biology. This new edition of the popular dictionary has been comprehensively reviewed and updated to include many important new concepts and words. The entries are short but informative, providing up-to-date information on a broad range of topics, including definitions for terms from the fields of Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Systems Biology, and Toxicology. There are over 21000 main entries, which include: details of biochemical substances and the processes in which they are involved, methods and concepts in molecular biology, and definitions of biochemical symbols and abbreviations. Each entry is accessibly written. They point out pitfalls where terms are often confused, and explain the precise syntax of biochemical terms such as Greek letters and other formatting, which are invariably lost when searching the Internet. In addition, the dictionary is generously illustrated with over 900 chemical structures. The Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will serve as an invaluable reference text for student and professional biochemists and molecular biologists seeking information both from within and outside their own fields. It will also be of relevance and use to a broader audience of life scientists seeking an authoritative overview of fundamental principles.
