Colonel Neil Mattox and his love, Chon Li Su, are trapped in
Pyongyang, North Korea, awaiting the destruction of the city by the
United States. A B-2 bomber will deliver a nuclear weapon, which
will vaporize the city and all who remain in it. The U.S. and South
Korea have joined forces, developed and delivered a biological
agent, which will lower crop yields in an attempt to starve North
Korea into submission. The North Koreans have discovered this
secret and in revenge have detonated a nuclear weapon on U.S. soil.
The U.S. in turn has vowed to destroy Pyongyang the same way, with
a nuclear weapon. When North Korea takes hostages to prevent the
destruction of Pyongyang, Col. Neil Mattox leads a rescue team
composed of Army Rangers, Recon Marines, Navy Seals, a CIA
paramilitary group and the U.K.'s Special Air Service into
Pyongyang to evacuate the hostages. In Pyongyang Mattox discovers a
hospital full of people, including over five hundred children, too
sick to move - the U.S. will vaporize them along with the city if
the attack is carried out. He also discovers a long-lost love, Chon
Li Su, once a Korean CIA agent sent into the North to distribute
the biological agent causing famine, who had elected to stay in the
North to somehow make up for what the U.S. and South Korea had done
to cause the starvation in the North. Mattox also finds their son
who he never knew existed. Mattox is determined to stay with his
love and their son while they and the rest of the allied forces
desperately struggle to evacuate the sick Koreans from the doomed
city. The allied forces finally come up with a plan, which will
sacrifice themselves to save their enemy's children.
Treasure hunter, Steve Hendrick dives on the sunken Japanese ship
Awa Maru, which was sunk by mistake by the U.S. Navy in 1945. This
was a real incident - the U.S. Navy submarine commander was court
martialed, and the United States apologized for this terrible
event. Steve's quest for sunken treasure has cost him dearly. His
brother was murdered by other divers who were also diving on the
wreck. Steve doggedly continues his search but is confronted by
pirates, the Chinese Navy, Russian SVR agents, and a Japanese
terrorist who thinks he's a reincarnated Samurai warrior. In the
process he meets a mysterious woman, Maggie Ramsey, who was a
captive of the pirates. Steve finds a mysterious cylinder on the
wreck of the Awa Maru, containing a message from Joseph Stalin, the
head of the Soviet Union at that time, to the Prime Minister of
Japan urging the Japanese to remain in the war against the United
States. Stalin promises nuclear weapons to use against the
Americans even though the Soviet Union didn't have any such weapons
at that time. What is the significance of the message and why are
the terrorists, and especially Maggie, so interested in it? Who is
she working for? This leads to the desperate confrontation with the
Japanese terrorists who intend to obliterate Tokyo and kill the
heads of state at a G8 economic conference, which are the heads of
state of the United States, Japan. United Kingdom, France, Germany,
Canada, Italy, Russia, and the European Union. Steve and Maggie
race to stop the Japanese terrorists from destroying Tokyo and
plunging the world into a devastating crisis.
Russian sleeper agents left over from the Cold War take over an
Alaskan radar station when they think a strategic nuclear attack
from Russia has been launched at the United States. Frank Trask, an
engineer at the site, and Ellen Gain, a covert CIA agent, race to
stop the Russian agents while trying to survive the extreme
elements on the Aleutian Island of Shemya. The two hook up with two
other survivors of the Russian agents' vicious attack on the island
personnel. Elverson, a security guard, and Vaughan, a personnel
employee, join Trask and Gain in trying to figure out why their
island has been taken over by hostile forces. Trask struggles with
inner demons, his excessive drinking and is haunted by his past as
a sniper in Vietnam. He comes to the sudden conclusion that one of
their group is a traitor, waiting to betray them at any time.
Meanwhile U.S. Marines are sent to Shemya when communications are
broken between the island and NORAD. A U.S. attack submarine is
also sent into the area and tracks a Russian submarine whose intent
is unknown. The Russian sub deploys a Spetsnaz team onto the
island. All these forces converge for one final battle at the top
of the world.
The North Koreans are making a brazen grab for the United States'
most important missile secrets, secrets which would render South
Korea and Japan helpless before a North Korean missile attack. A
heavily armed assault team from a North Korean Kilo class submarine
is about to shift the balance of power in the Far East and leave
the United States also vulnerable to a missile attack. The death
ship known as "Master Three" must be prevented at all costs from
returning to North Korea with its load of top secret documents and
a kidnapped American engineer whose head is filled with missile
secrets. On an isolated Pacific atoll, an undermanned, outgunned
band of civilians, servicemen, and engineers is America's last line
of defense . . . and her final hope. They must fight the ultimate
battle - against an enemy few could have imagined.
