Originally published in 1923, this book was written by the Canadian psychiatrist John Thompson MacCurdy (1886-1947). The text provides a discussion of aspects of psychoanalysis and puts forward solutions for various problems in the field. It is divided into four main parts: 'Freudian Formulations'; 'The Relationship of Psychoanalysis and Suggestion'; 'The Preconscious Phase'; 'Instincts and their Manifestations'. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the development of psychoanalysis and the writings of MacCurdy.
Originally published in 1928 as part of the Cambridge Psychological Library, this book argues that the divide between psychology and physiology is largely artificial, and that each discipline can contribute to further understanding of the other. MacCurdy applies conclusions drawn from behavioural psychology to physiological phenomena, and discusses phenomena of the nervous system in an attempt to create a vocabulary 'in which all the phenomena of living matter can be discussed'. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the overlap of psychology and the more physical sciences.
First published in 1918, and originally intended as advice to American psychiatrists in 1917 to prepare them for the problems they would face as a result of America's participation in WWI, this book confronts the psychiatric problems peculiar to veterans. MacCurdy divides the types of neuroses into two varieties, those which manifest as anxiety, and those which produce psychosomatic symptoms, and suggests forms of treatment for each. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of psychology or the treatment of disorders arising from war.
