This book is a short photo-history of one Luftwaffe fighter
Staffel, predominantly showing the Battle of Britain period, up to
the point when Willy Fronhoefer belly-landed his Bf 109 E-4, Yellow
10, W. Nr. 1184, at Jubilee Hall Farm, Ulcombe, on 31st August 1940
following combat with Pilot Officer Colin Gray of 54 Squadron. The
photographs record not only aircraft, but personalities of the
Staffel flying and ground personnel's scenes of daily life, the
devastation found as the Staffel advanced through occupied
territory, the enemy aircraft found destroyed or abandoned, and a
population made transient by the horror of war. It is a unique,
brief insight into a very small section of the German war machine
as it enjoyed unparalleled success in its push across western
Europe in the spring and summer of 1940.
This in-depth work on the Messerschmitt Bf 110 variants 'B' through
'G' provides for the first time a comprehensive set of colored line
drawings showing the changes as this Luftwaffe fighter evolved. For
every line drawing there is an accompanying photograph and
explanatory text. This work takes you through the pre-war period,
the Polish campaign, the war in northern Europe and western Europe
in the spring of 1940, the Battle of Britain, the Russian front,
the Mediterranean theatre, Defence of the Reich, and night
fighters. Lesser-known sub-variants are also featured, such as the
Messerschmitt 110s used in transport glider-towing duties. A
comprehensive appendix takes the reader through the changes to each
sub-variant by way of cutaway drawings. The colored artwork by
Fernando Estanislau is simply breathtaking, and establishes him
immediately in the top ranks of aviation artists. A 'must-have' for
the Luftwaffe enthusiast and modeller alike.
This photo-history of Schnellkampfgeschwader 210 and
Zerstoerergeschwader 1 "Wespengeschwader" in the years 1941-1944
shows for the first time in a single volume the many personalities,
and the varied Messerschmitt and Junkers aircraft types flown by
these units. Between the two units, they flew in more theatres of
operations than any other unit. The work also contains a
comprehensive loss/damage list for personnel and aircraft, drawn
from the Deutsche Dienststelle records and the Quartermaster loss
returns, and appendices covering reports on several combats by the
actual participants, and extracts from three Flight Log books
outlining the many tasks undertaken by the flying personnel of the
unit. Drawing photographic content from mainly private sources,
this work fills a gap in the overall documented history of the
Luftwaffe in World War II.
