The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes Edited by
Charles H. Hocutt and E. O. Wiley "Zoogeography belongs in every
college, agency, and major public library." --Wisconsin Academy
Review .,."There is little doubt that this book will come to be
accepted as a 'classic' in North American ichthyological
literature." --Journal of Biogeography "All the contributors are to
be congratulated on this fascinating and scholarly publication."
--Aquaculture and Fisheries Management 1986 (0 471-86419-6) 866 pp.
Marine Fauna and Flora of Bermuda A Systematic Guide to the
Identification of Marine Organisms Edited by Wolfgang Sterrer .,."a
beautifully illustrated work..." --International Journal of
Crustacean Research "Marine Fauna and Flora of Bermuda fully gives
what the editor stated as its purpose: 'to reveal the beauty and
order in marine life by introducing the reader to the organisms
that inhabit the ocean around Bermuda.' The book will have much use
beyond these waters. It well deserves to be highly recommended to
'scientists, teachers, students, and other nature lovers' for whom
it was designed to serve as a guide" --Helgolander
Meeresuntersuchungen 1986 (0 471-82336-8) 742 pp. Energy and
Resource Quality The Ecology of the Economic Process Charles A. S.
Hall, Cutler J. Cleveland, and Robert Kaufmann .,."The entire text
is a pleasure to read. This is a first class textbook in which all
the major socioeconomic energy issues are examined in a way which
makes the reader reassess his own position and attitudes. Highly
suitable for energy-related courses at the university level and a
valuable source book for libraries." --Energy World 1986 (0
471-08790-4) 577 pp.
Human impacts and emerging mega-trends such as climate change and
energy scarcity will impact natural resource management in this
century. This is especially true for deltas because of their
ecological and economic importance and their sensitivity to climate
change. The Mississippi delta is one of the largest in the world
and has been strongly impacted by human activities. Currently there
is an ambitious plan for restoration of the delta. This book, by a
renown group of delta experts, provides an overview of the
challenges facing the delta and charts - a way forward to
sustainable management.
This book takes you on a unique journey through American history,
taking time to consider the forces that shaped the development of
various cities and regions, and arrives at an unexpected conclusion
regarding sustainability. From the American Dream to globalization
to the digital and information revolutions, we assume that humans
have taken control of our collective destinies in spite of potholes
in the road such as the Great Recession of 2007-2009. However,
these attitudes were formed during a unique 100-year period of
human history in which a large but finite supply of fossil fuels
was tapped to feed our economic and innovation engine. Today, at
the peak of the Oil Age, the horizon looks different. Cities such
as Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas are situated where water and
other vital ecological services are scarce, and the enormous flows
of resources and energy that were needed to create the
megalopolises of the 20th century will prove unsustainable. Climate
change is a reality, and regional impacts will become increasingly
severe. Economies such as Las Vegas, which are dependent on
discretionary income and buffeted by climate change, are already
suffering the fate of the proverbial canary in the coal mine.
Finite resources will mean profound changes for society in general
and the energy-intensive lifestyles of the US and Canada in
particular. But not all regions are equally vulnerable to these
21st-century megatrends. Are you ready to look beyond "America's
Most Livable Cities" to the critical factors that will determine
the sustainability of your municipality and region? Find out where
your city or region ranks according to the forces that will impact
our lives in the next years and decades. Find out how: *resource
availability and ecological services shaped the modern landscape
*emerging megatrends will make cities and regions more or less
livable in the new century *your city or region ranks on a
"sustainability" map of the United States *urban metabolism puts
large cities at particular risk *sustainability factors will favor
economic solutions at a local, rather than global, level *these
principles apply to industrial economies and countries globally.

Coasts and Estuaries: The Future provides valuable information on
how we can protect and maintain natural ecological structures while
also allowing estuaries to deliver services that produce societal
goods and benefits. These issues are addressed through chapters
detailing case studies from estuaries and coastal waters worldwide,
presenting a full range of natural variability and human pressures.
Following this, a series of chapters written by scientific leaders
worldwide synthesizes the problems and offers solutions for
specific issues graded within the framework of the
socio-economic-environmental mosaic. These include fisheries,
climate change, coastal megacities, evolving human-nature
interactions, remediation measures, and integrated coastal
management. The problems faced by half of the world living near
coasts are truly a worldwide challenge as well as an opportunity
for scientists to study commonalities and differences and provide
solutions. This book is centered around the proposed DAPSI(W)R(M)
framework, where drivers of basic human needs requires activities
that each produce pressures. The pressures are mechanisms of state
change on the natural system and Impacts on societal welfare
(including well-being). These problems then require responses,
which are the solutions relating to governance, socio-economic and
cultural measures (Scharin et al 2016).
The purpose of this paper is to establish the critical need for the
continued development and introduction of the F-22 Raptor as the
air superiority fighter for the joint forces of the United States
military as they enter the 21st century. Air superiority is the
first and primary mission for the air component commander where
soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen are involved in combat.
Without it, our forces will be subject to potentially devastating
attacks from the air, limiting their ability to attack the enemy at
a place and time of their choosing and leaving them vulnerable in
their rear echelons. This paper will review military risk, joint
and service doctrine, and highlight the emerging threat to our
capability to provide air superiority for the joint force
commander. It will then define the characteristics, roles, and
missions of the F-22 and support its development and introduction
into service with a brief comparison to other service options.
