Of One Mind - The Collectivization of Science (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): John Ziman Of One Mind - The Collectivization of Science (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
John Ziman
R1,104 Discovery Miles 11 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This superb collection by the eminent physicist and critic John Ziman, opens with an album of portraits of scientists at work and at play, in which "plaster saints" are turned charmingly and thoughtfully into "living people." You'll find deft sketches of some of the more striking figures in the gallery of modern physics - Albert Einstein, Freeman Dyson, Lev Landau, Mark Azbel, Andrei Sakharov. We then take a journey through the world depicted by contemporary scientists, how physicists make discoveries, and how they test each other's claims. Ziman says that what we know about the physical world - the product of the vast collective effort of scientists everywhere - is no more than a human representation of an accessible reality. The basic lesson of these essays, "that you and I and the rest of us act on the understanding that we are all living in the same world" is a key to a general theory of scientific knowledge. Ziman then travels with us on an even more delicate odyssey, into the personal as well as the professional minds and performances of scientists as they are pulled into competing directions. We discover that the path of discovery is strewn with complex human needs, the demands of the state, the desire for profits, the exercise of technical virtuosity. Today, scientists are no longer lonely seekers after truth, but have emerged with multiple obligations as technical and military experts, entrepreneurs, managers, political advisers, publicists, and educators, as well as ordinary citizens. The personal preferences of scientists are now transformed and often under the control of mammoth institutions - great universities, a tangle of granting agencies, huge defense establishments, and global corporations. Rarely do scientists work alone in isolated laboratories. They are linked together in intricate networks, busy with delicate instruments requiring armies of technicians and collaborators. This is an essential guide for the initiated and the novice over the terrain of modern science and what it means to be a scientist today.

The Evolution of Cultural Entities (Hardcover): Michael Wheeler, John Ziman, Margaret A. Boden The Evolution of Cultural Entities (Hardcover)
Michael Wheeler, John Ziman, Margaret A. Boden
R2,440 Discovery Miles 24 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Ever since Darwin, scholars have noted that cultural entities such as languages, laws, firms and theories seem to 'evolve' through sequences of variation, selection and replication, in many ways just like living organisms. These essays consider whether this comparison is 'just a metaphor', or whether modern evolutionary theory can help us to understand the dynamics of different cultural domains.

The 'evolutionary paradigm of rationality' has a significant role to play throughout the human sciences, but raises complex issues in every cultural context where it is applied. By fostering discussion between scholars from a wide range of research traditions, this volume aims to influence the evolution of all of them.

The Research System in Transition (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): Susan E. Cozzens, Peter Healey, Arie Rip, John Ziman The Research System in Transition (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
Susan E. Cozzens, Peter Healey, Arie Rip, John Ziman
R5,822 Discovery Miles 58 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

On a mountainside in sunny Tuscany, in October 1989, 96 people from 23 countries on five continents gathered to learn and teach about the problems of managing contemporary science. The diversity of economic and political systems represented in the group was matched by our occupations, which stretched from science policy practitioners, through research scientists and engineers, through academic observers of science and science policy. It was this diversity, along with the opportunities for infonnal discussion provided by long meals and remote location, that made the conference a special learning experience. Except at lecture time, it was impossible to distinguish the "students" at this event from the "teachers," and even the most senior members of the teaching staff went away with a sense that they had learned more from this group than from many a standard conference on science policy they had attended. The flavor of the conference experience cannot be captured adequately in a proceedings volume, and so we have not tried to create a historical record in this book. Instead, we have attempted to illustrate the core problems the panicipants at the conference shared, discussed, and debated, using both lectures delivered by the fonnal teaching staff and summaries of panel discussions, which extended to other panicipants and therefore increased the range of experiences reponed.

Technological Innovation as an Evolutionary Process (Paperback): John Ziman Technological Innovation as an Evolutionary Process (Paperback)
John Ziman
R2,528 Discovery Miles 25 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Technological artefacts and biological organisms ‘evolve’ by very similar processes of blind variation and selective retention. This analogy is explored systematically, for the first time, by a team of international experts from evolutionary biology, history and sociology of science and technology, cognitive and computer science, economics, psychology, education, cultural anthropology and research management. Do technological ‘memes’ play the role of genes? In what sense are novel inventions ‘blind’? Does the element of design make them ‘Lamarckian’ rather than ‘Darwinian’? Is the recombination of ideas the essence of technological creativity? Can invention be simulated computationally? What are the entities that actually evolve - artefacts, ideas or organisations? These are only some of the many questions stimulated and partially answered by this powerful metaphor. With its practical demonstration of the explanatory potential of ‘evolutionary reasoning’ in a well-defined context, this book is a ground-breaking contribution to every discipline concerned with cultural change.

Real Science - What it Is and What it Means (Paperback, Revised): John Ziman Real Science - What it Is and What it Means (Paperback, Revised)
John Ziman
R1,398 R943 Discovery Miles 9 430 Save R455 (33%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Unlike most other similar books, this systematic, carefully reasoned, non-technical analysis of the nature and significance of scientific knowledge opens the way to reconciliation in the 'science wars'. By describing how academic scientists actually undertake research and communicate their findings, it shows that the philosophy, psychology and sociology of science are inextricably entwined, and that 'realism' and 'relativism' are just two sides of the same coin. The writing is well-informed, down-to-earth and lucid.
