This book is about a journey with the Center for Strategic
Alliances in Education for School and District Improvement with
stakeholders in a school targeted for school improvement. The first
chapter puts into context the notion of school, its purpose and the
incumbent variables of values, attitudes, organizational and
leadership behaviors and instructional practices. Throughout the
book, the authors look at three contextual boundaries: (1)
historical, (2) the lens of former students and their perceptions
of the presence or absence of those variables and (3) a comparison
of labeled schools and the views and perceptions of stakeholders
with regard to quality, equity and adequacy. This is a compelling
journey which utilizes quantitative and qualitative data to take a
critical look at the processes involved and the strategies used in
America's journey in the quest for excellence. The authors' story
is one of the pursuits of innovation, reinvention, equity,
excellence and culturally relevant education experiences that
inspire and reframe the discussion about "getting to excellence."
The book is replete with illustrations of weaknesses hidden in
abstract policies, institutional persistence, and culturally void
programs, methodologies and practices. It advocates a methodology
for arriving at well-conceived processes for achieving acceptance
and academic excellence through collaboration among those to whom
education is important - the children and the communities where
they live.
Finally, we have a book that adopts orphans and foster children
into a family of love. This book is titled "Memories of a Cherry
Blossom Tree" and it was written by Fletcher Johnson Jr. His book
is based on fictional accounts of children who came from various
backgrounds of abuse, neglect, abandonment and displacement.
Readers will experience elements of love, joy, peace, and
compassion. This book contains multiculturalism, drama, poetry, a
recipe and a dinner theater menu. It is a book for all ages. This
is a tribute to all social service agencies, educators, adoptive
and foster parents around the world. This story takes place during
the year of 1908 in a city called, "Macon," which is located in the
heart of Georgia. Some call it "Central Georgia." The events unfold
in an orphanage home known to many as "Stillwater's." The name
alone represents "Peace." The Lady in Pink established the home for
those children who were abandoned, abused, neglected, or had no
place to turn. She had domestic and international ties to agencies
that screened and listed prospective parents who were seeking to
adopt children. While the children waited, she nurtured them with
love, poetry, and plenty of care. After all of the children became
adopted, the Lady in Pink passed away some years later. She was
laid to rest underneath the Cherry Blossom Tree where the women
once sang and played as orphan girls. The women built a new
Orphanage and began having annual Cherry Blossom festivals as way
of paying tribute to the Lady in Pink.

Have you ever wanted to know how modern digital communications
systems work? Find out with this step-by-step guide to building a
complete digital radio that includes every element of a typical,
real-world communication system. Chapter by chapter, you will
create a MATLAB realization of the various pieces of the system,
exploring the key ideas along the way, as well as analyzing and
assessing the performance of each component. Then, in the final
chapters, you will discover how all the parts fit together and
interact as you build the complete receiver. In addition to
coverage of crucial issues, such as timing, carrier recovery and
equalization, the text contains over 400 practical exercises,
providing invaluable preparation for industry, where wireless
communications and software radio are becoming increasingly
important. A variety of extra resources are also provided online,
including lecture slides and a solutions manual for instructors.
An effective blend of carefully explained theory and practical
applications, this text imparts the fundamentals of both
information theory and data compression. Although the two topics
are related, this unique text allows either topic to be presented
independently, and it was specifically designed so that the data
compression section requires no prior knowledge of information
theory. The treatment of information theory, while theoretical and
abstract, is quite elementary, making this text less daunting than
many others. After presenting the fundamental definitions and
results of the theory, the authors then apply the theory to
memoryless, discrete channels with zeroth-order, one-state sources.
The chapters on data compression acquaint students with a myriad of
lossless compression methods and then introduce two lossy
compression methods. Students emerge from this study competent in a
wide range of techniques. The authors' presentation is highly
practical but includes some important proofs, either in the text or
in the exercises, so instructors can, if they choose, place more
emphasis on the mathematics. Introduction to Information Theory and
Data Compression, Second Edition is ideally suited for an
upper-level or graduate course for students in mathematics,
engineering, and computer science. Features: Expanded discussion of
the historical and theoretical basis of information theory that
builds a firm, intuitive grasp of the subject Reorganization of
theoretical results along with new exercises, ranging from the
routine to the more difficult, that reinforce students' ability to
apply the definitions and results in specific situations.

While there are many books that teach the "how-to" of photography,
Science for the Curious Photographer is a book for those who also
want to understand how photography works. Beginning with an
introduction to the history and science of photography, Charles S.
Johnson, Jr. addresses questions about the principles of
photography, such as why a camera needs a lens, how lenses work,
and why modern lenses are so complicated. Addressing the complex
aspects of digital photography, the book discusses color
management, resolution, "noise" in images, and the limits of human
perception. The creation and appreciation of art in photography is
discussed from the standpoint of modern cognitive science. A
crucial read for those seeking the scientific context to
photographic practice, this second edition has been comprehensively
updated, including discussion of DSLRs, mirror-less cameras, and a
new chapter on the limits of human vision and perception.

This book provides instruction in applying basic treatment
strategies to patient care. Emphasis is placed on teachi. ng
diagnostic skills, and especially, the therapeutic management of
emotionally disturbed patients. This book is intended as a
companion text to Basic Psychopathology: A Programmed Text, whi. ch
focuses more on teaching the description and observational skills
for diagnosing common psychopathologic syn- dromes. Basic
Psychotherapeutics gives pragmatic suggestions for treating a
variety of psychopathologic disorders, many of which are newly
classi- fied in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual - III (DSM-II1)
published by The American Psychiatric Association. We have adopted
the terminology and many, but not all, of the diagnosti. c criteria
used in DSM-III. The treatment recommendations proposed are
eclectic in nature and the infor- mation presented is
non-theoretical and patient centered. Basic Psychotherapeutics is
divided into three parts. The first re- views basic data collection
procedures and treatment skills; it includes chapters on
interviewing, the mental status examination and pharmaco- logic,
psychologic and behavioral therapy. The next section includes
chapters on commonly encountered psychiatric syndromes such as
schiz- ophrenic, affective and anxiety disorders. The final
chapters are pre- sentations of special clinical interest, such as
the management of suicidal patients, psychiatric emergencies,
treating the dying patient and his family, and others.

Around the world, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition)
systems and other real-time process control networks run
mission-critical infrastructure--everything from the power grid to
water treatment, chemical manufacturing to transportation. These
networks are at increasing risk due to the move from proprietary
systems to more standard platforms and protocols and the
interconnection to other networks. Because there has been limited
attention paid to security, these systems are seen as largely
unsecured and very vulnerable to attack.
This book addresses currently undocumented security issues
affecting SCADA systems and overall critical infrastructure
protection. The respective co-authors are among the leading experts
in the world capable of addressing these related-but-independent
concerns of SCADA security. Headline-making threats and
countermeasures like malware, sidejacking, biometric applications,
emergency communications, security awareness llanning, personnel
& workplace preparedness and bomb threat planning will be
addressed in detail in this one of a kind book-of-books dealing
with the threats to critical infrastructure protection. They
collectivly have over a century of expertise in their respective
fields of infrastructure protection. Included among the
contributing authors are Paul Henry, VP of Technology Evangelism,
Secure Computing, Chet Hosmer, CEO and Chief Scientist at Wetstone
Technologies, Phil Drake, Telecommunications Director, The
Charlotte Observer, Patrice Bourgeois, Tenable Network Security,
Sean Lowther, President, Stealth Awareness and Jim Windle, Bomb
Squad Commander, CMPD.
