This open access book introduces research on migration and religion
with the focus on migration to western European countries from the
1950s and onwards. The book is an in-depth presentation of the main
research trends as to methods, theories and empirical zones on
migration and religion. In a unique way, the book brings together
research about the topic aligning it with the experiences and
urgencies of migrants. The first part of three introduces key
concepts and presents main research trends over time. The second
part deals with the processes of establishment – on an individual
level as well as on a group and society level. The third and final
part focuses on religious change in relation to religious ideas and
habits. It further highlights religious creativity. The third part
finishes with a discussion about challenges to research and what we
still do not know enough about.
A useful introduction to the social, political, cultural and
religious position of Muslims living in contemporary Europe. It
describes the history of early European Muslims and outlines the
causes and courses of 20th-century Muslim immigration. Explaining
how Muslim communities have developed in individual countries, the
book examines their origins, their present day ethnic composition,
distribution and organisational patterns, and the political, legal
and cultural contexts in which they exist. It also provides a
comparative consideration of issues common to Muslims in all
Western European countries, namely the role of the family, and the
questions of worship, education and religious thought. In the
fourth edition all country-related chapters have been substantially
updated. A new chapter has also been added on Southern Europe,
where the maturity of a new generation has seen moves towards
political integration. This new chapter will reflect the extensive
research of the past decade in this area
Awakening - an Islamic media company formed in London - has created
the soundtrack to many Muslim lives during the last two decades. As
the company celebrates their first 20 years in the industry, Jonas
Otterbeck examines their remarkable rise to success and their
established reputation as one of the most important global
enterprises producing pop music inspired by Islam. Otterbeck
thoroughly describes the history and development of new Islamic
popular music genres, in particular pop-nashid and Islamic pop, for
the first time. He argues that Awakening - a company with the
ambition to portray itself as Islamic - is best understood in
relation to the ethical turn in Islamic thinking. In this way, he
explores how the Islamic pop industry is, in effect, altering the
very formulations of Islamic thought.
