Shaping markets through competition and economic regulation is at the heart of addressing the development challenges facing countries in southern Africa. The contributors to Competition Law And Economic Regulation: Addressing Market Power In Southern Africa critically assess the efficacy of the competition and economic regulation frameworks, including the impact of a number of the regional competition authorities in a range of sectors throughout southern Africa.

Featuring academics as well as practitioners in the field, the book addresses issues common to southern African countries, where markets are small and concentrated, with particularly high barriers to entry, and where the resources to enforce legislation against anti-competitive conduct are limited. What is needed, the contributors argue, is an understanding of competition and regional integration as part of an inclusive growth agenda for Africa. By examining competition and regulation in a single framework, and viewing this within the southern African experience, this volume adds new perspectives to the global competition literature.

It is an essential reference tool and will be of great interest to policymakers and regulators, as well as the rapidly growing ecosystem of legal practitioners and economists engaged in the field.

..". a useful resource for practitioners and activists, both in South Africa and elsewhere. It represents a substantive study in an area that has been neglected, particularly in South Africa, and points to the dire need for more research and study." . H-SAfrica

"This collection of essays is a significant advance in the field of refugee protection and the law in South Africa, as very little research has been done on this topic. Few authors other than those included in the collection have addressed wider refugee and migration issues in South...a very enlightening resource for both practitioners and academic researchers in South Africa and elsewhere." . African Affairs

"This book will provide important background reading for a second generation of researchers to look beyond the establishment of the asylum system to consider the extent to which, over the long term, there is substantial and contextually appropriate asylum policy in South Africa. It is equally useful for those involved in comparative studies of different asylum systems because of the detail that is provided about the internal functioning of the relevant South African government departments." . International Migration & Integration

Divided into three thematic parts to guide the reader, this important volume documents the development and implementation of refugee policy in South Africa over a 10-year period from 1996 until 2006. In doing so, it addresses issues of detention, gender, children and health as well as welfare policies for refugees. The contributions, all written by academics and practitioners of refugee protection, vividly illustrate the tangible shifts and concerns of a process that is not only aimed at establishing policies and legislation but also practices concerning refugees.

Jeff Handmaker is a lecturer in law, human rights and development at the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University in The Hague and honorary research fellow at the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand.

Lee Anne de la Hunt will spend two terms from October 2010 to March 2011 as a Visiting Fellow at the Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford Department of International Development.

Jonathan Klaaren is Professor of Law and, from August 2010, Acting Head of the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg."

This volume locates the international debates on competition and corporate power in the critical issue of inclusive growth. There is a particular focus on shaping regional energy markets, taking into account the implications of climate change as well as the challenges of extending access to affordable energy to low-income households and small businesses.

The volume critically assesses the efficacy of the competition and economic regulation framework, reviewing the impact of the regional (ie. southern African) competition authorities and surveying the impact of particular interventions in the competition and economic regulation arena. This book accomplishes two tasks that are still not adequately covered in the existing literature: first, the book examines in a single framework both competition and economic regulation and second, it takes a southern African view in examining these two topics. Competition and regulation are both distinct but crucial areas of knowledge for the development of the economies of the countries of southern Africa. The legal and policy framework for competition and regulation in the region is relatively new with a number of national institutions still in their infancy.

There is an emphasis on developing African case studies for both training and knowledge-sharing purposes.

The states of the Southern African Development Community (SADe have committed themselves to increased regional cooperation and integration. This study collates information on national immigration legislation into a single region-wide publication. It is divided thematically into chapters surveying citizenship and registration laws in the SADC, migration and immigration legislation and policies, and refugee protection and immigration controls. The report identifies points of similarity and difference in national immigration law between SADC member states, and investigates the possibilities for harmonisation of national immigration.
