It's not every day that we wake up and decide to put life on hold
and start living. This is what Jonathan did after turning forty.
Having realized that probably he had already lived half his life he
decided to embark on a sabbatical to enjoy time off, reflect about
his life and make sure he was living life on his terms and not on
someone else's. Coming from a small Mediterranean island, culture
and circumstance often dictate our actions, behaviors, and next
steps. Jonathan broke with this norm and is calling on us to
re-evaluate what really makes us tick. #Forty is a journey which
questions the way we have done things and assists us in answering
the 'what next?'. It is our journey - one of self-discovery. A
thought provoking, easy to use hand book of a few of the life
lessons Jonathan has picked up along the years and others which he
is still working on. Pick it up, put it down. Read a chapter or two
and reflect. Use it whichever way you wish - there is a lesson for
each and every one of us. Most of all - enjoy the journey. Table of

Bryophyte Biology provides an extensive overview of the hornworts,
liverworts, and mosses; diverse groups of land plants that occupy a
great variety of habitats throughout the world. This edition covers
essential aspects of bryophyte biology, from morphology,
physiological ecology and conservation, to speciation, and
genomics. Revised classifications incorporate contributions from
recent phylogenetic studies. Six new chapters complement fully
updated chapters from the original book to provide a completely
up-to-date resource. New chapters focus on the contributions of
Physcomitrella to plant genomic research, population ecology of
bryophytes, mechanisms of drought tolerance, a phylogenomic
perspective on land plant evolution, and problems and progress of
bryophyte speciation and conservation. Written by leaders in the
field, this book offers an authoritative treatment of bryophyte
biology, with rich citation of the current literature, suitable for
advanced students and researchers.

Like Muybridge and Edgerton, Jonathan Shaw's work demands an
engineer's engagement with the form. He photographs the passage of
time recreating our perception of movement as something liquid.
From his earliest work Shaw has been designing, cannibalizing and
building his own customized camera equipment to produce his strange
yet somehow accurate images.

The British government periodically publishes a Strategic Defence
and Security Review, an appraisal of the armed forces that seeks to
understand and prepare for the defense challenges that lie ahead.
This report is often controversial--the 2010 review, for example,
made headlines for all the wrong reasons, as major defense projects
such as the NIMROD aircraft were discontinued at huge cost, while
other projects were maintained only because they were too expensive
to abandon. In advance of the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security
Review, Jonathan Shaw argues persuasively for the need to rethink
how governments and Whitehall devise their strategies and reach
crucial decisions. Beginning with the review's often imprecise use
of language, Shaw challenges the assumptions that underlie the
British government's current practices. Ultimately, he suggests how
Whitehall can improve its approaches and, equally important, its
credibility.
This volume provides a synthesis of recent work on evolutionary
aspects of metal tolerance in plants. It presents contributions
from scientists with a wide diversity of expertise. It covers the
evolution of heavy metal tolerance in groups of plants, fungi, and
protists. The book discusses the physiological, genetic and
molecular aspects of metal tolerances. It deals with the evolution
of populations in metal-contaminated environments. Several chapters
include tolerance in animals in order to place the rest of the book
on plants in proper perspective. This publication is an exciting
addition for scientists with both applied and basic interest in
metal toxicity and tolerance. It is of importance to those in
vegetation ecology, land reclamation, agronomy, physiology,
population ecology, ecological genetics, evolutionary biology and
molecular biology.
