The battleships of the _Dunkerque_ and _Richelieu_ classes were the
most radical and influential designs of the interwar period, and
were coveted by the British, the Germans and the Italians following
the Armistice of June 1940\. After an extensive refit in the USA,
_Richelieu_ went on to serve alongside the Royal Navy during
1943-45. Using a wealth of primary-source material, some of which
has only recently been made available, John Jordan and Robert Dumas
have embarked on a completely new study of these important and
technically interesting ships. A full account of their development
is followed by a detailed analysis of their design characteristics,
profusely illustrated by inboard profiles and schematic drawings.
The technical chapters are interspersed with operational histories
of the ships, with a particular focus on the operations in which
they engaged other heavy units: Mers el-Kebir, Dakar and
Casablanca. These accounts include a detailed analysis of their
performance in action and the damage sustained, and are supported
by specially-drawn maps and by the logs of _Strasbourg_ and
_Richelieu_. Twenty-two colour profile and plan views illustrate
the ships' appearance at the various stages of their careers.

One late spring morning the American artist Jackson Pollock began
work on the canvas that would ultimately come to be known as Number
1, 1950 ("Lavender Mist").
Award-winning authors Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan use this
moment as the departure point for a unique picture book about a
great painter and the way in which he worked. Their lyrical text,
drawn from Pollock's own comments and those made by members of his
immediate circle, is perfectly complemented by vibrant watercolors
by Robert Andrew Parker that honor his spirit of the artist without
imitating his paintings.
A photographic reproduction of the finished painting, a short
biography, a bibliography, and a detailed list of notes and sources
that are fascinating reading in their own right make this an
authoritative as well as beautiful book for readers of all
ages.

This wide-ranging and innovative collection of essays addresses
important issues in cultural studies and the history of the book.
Multidisciplinary in approach, the essays consider different
aspects of the production, circulation, and consumption of printed
texts throughout the nineteenth century. Topics studied include
market trends, modes of publication, the use of pseudonyms by women
writers, readerships and reading ideologies, and copyright law; and
the book examines a wide range of printed materials, from
valentines, advertisements, illustrations, and fashionable annuals,
to the more traditional literary genres of poetry, fiction and
periodical essays. The authors under discussion include Dickens,
the Brontes, George Eliot, Meredith, and Walter Pater. Contributors
draw on speech-act, reader-response, and gender theory in addition
to various historical, narratological, materialist, and
bibliographical perspectives.
Completed in 1959, hidden from the Soviet secret police for twenty
years, THE ROSE OF THE WORLD was first made public through excerpts
in the magazine Novy Mir in 1989. THE ROSE OF THE WORLD is a unique
and poetic cosmological treatise, passionately written out of
personal spiritual experience. It offers a prophetic call for the
spiritual reunification of all people and an open and harmonious
relationship among the great world religions. For Daniel Andreev,
The Rose of the world is a spiritual flower whose roots are in
heaven; each petal is a unique image of the great world religions
and cultures, and the whole flower is their joint co-creation with
God. Lindisfarne Books is proud to publish the first English
translation of this masterpiece of contemporary Russian spiritual
literature, a work that belongs to Russian religious thought in the
tradition of Vladimir Soloviev, and to the West in the tradition of
Dante and Blake-truly a work for the twenty-first century.
