Fundamentals of Investments is aimed at the introductory
investments class with students who have relatively little
familiarity with investments. The text is written in a relaxed,
informal style that engages the student and treats him or her as an
active participant rather than a passive information absorber.
Fundamentals appeals to intuition and basic principles whenever
possible because the authors found that this approach effectively
promotes understanding. The text also makes extensive use of
examples, drawing on material from the world around us and using
familiar companies wherever appropriate. Throughout, the text
strikes a balance by introducing and covering the essentials while
leaving some of the details to follow-up courses. Topics are
organized in a way that would make them easy to apply-whether to a
portfolio simulation or to real life-and support these topics with
hands-on activities. This tenth edition provides a terrific
framework and introduction for students looking to pursue a career
in investments-particularly for those interested in eventually
holding the CFA charter.

Living Racism is based on the premise that race and racism are
well-entrenched elements of US society. The contributors of this
volume argue that race and racism are more than mere concepts;
instead, they see and treat these as part of the fabric that
constitutes and organizes everyday life. Consequently, race and
racism are maintained through structures such as social
institutions (e.g., schools, criminal justice system, media, etc.)
and are carried by individual actors through racial ideologies and
a racial etiquette (beliefs, practices, traditions, and customs)
that inform how people relate to and interact with one another (or
not). As expressed throughout this book, the notion of living
racism is twofold. On the one hand, living racism denotes the ways
in which racism is embodied and active, much like a living
organism. On the other hand, living racism connects with the ways
that people must navigate racism in their individual and collective
lives.

Originally published as "Le Mirage linguistique," this book remains
the definitive study of the role of linguistics in structuralism
and poststructuralism. Thomas Pavel examines recent French thought
through the work of luminaries such as Levi-Strauss, Lacan,
Foucault, and Derrida. The "spell of language" for Pavel consists
of three things: the promise that linguistics seemed to represent
for the humanities and social sciences; the distortions,
misunderstandings, and willful neglect incumbent upon the
"linguistic turn"; and, above all, the break with traditional
humanism. He isolates three modes of thought-moderate
structuralism, scientific structuralism, and speculative
structuralism-and shows how even as they diverge from each other,
they all advocate an antihumanist point of view.
In this spirited book, Pavel shows that structuralism's flawed use
of linguistic theory has rendered hollow the philosophical core of
a whole generation of work in the human sciences.
