The Canary: Natural History, Science and Cultural Significance
covers the ecology, evolution and conservation of the canary and
related species, along with the history and cultural significance
of the domestic canary worldwide and various scientific disciplines
in which canaries have played a key role as a model species. The
book synthesizes the multiple ways in which the canary and its
relatives have been, and continue to be, an important scientific
model in diverse areas and have influenced human culture. Each
chapter is written by international experts in areas such as
biogeography, animal behavior, evolutionary ecology, conservation,
neurobiology, genetics, or ethnology. In covering this eclectic
array of topics, while always focusing on the canary and its close
relatives, this book uses the immense appeal of the canary as a
vehicle to present notions of ecology, evolution, biodiversity
conservation, and so on, to a wide audience.
todos los que poblamos este maravilloso mundo para disfrutarlo;

From the Preface The world of spectroscopy began its development in
the second half of the XX century and has been constantly evolving
ever since. From being a set of specialized techniques available
only to a few, spectroscopy -in its many facets- has now become a
tool chest in demand by engineers and scientists of different
backgrounds. Unfortunately, the physics concepts underlying the
spectroscopic techniques remain in the field of physics and most
users -being from backgrounds other than physics- learn to use
commercial spectroscopy devices without ever learning much about
their operational principles. In the University of Texas at El
Paso, just like in many other Institutions, students from
engineering and science fields come to interact with x ray
fluorescence, x ray spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, to
name a few, without ever taking a modern physics course that would
teach them, for instance, how x rays are produced, detected or how
they interact with atomic electrons. This deficiency, which can be
easily remedied with a set of carefully designed lecture notes and
exercises, tends to propagate into the realm of applications
turning spectroscopy into an obscure subject mastered only by
experts; this needs not to be the case. It is with the goal of
providing the minimum physics background needed to understand
spectroscopy in its more general terms that we write these lecture
notes. They are aimed at an audience of science and engineering
students at the senior and graduate level, and mostly composed of
chemists, geologists, metallurgists, mechanical and electrical
engineers and, yes, physics students, all interested in studying
materials through the use of spectroscopic tools. Assuming only a
background of basic classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism,
and thermodynamics, these notes focus on explaining how radiation
(particles and electromagnetic) interact with matter, and how this
is taken advantage of to study materials through the use of
spectrometers. Because of the narrowly defined audience, the book
is equally limited in scope, most physics processes will be
presented more from a phenomenological point of view than from a
first-principles fully-theoretical approach. Students ready for
more profound treatises will be directed throughout the book to
other more complete sources. Designed as a teaching textbook, a
large number of exercises and problems have been included to
illustrate concepts and applications. Instructors are encouraged to
contact the authors to obtain a complimentary file with the
solutions, a test bank and powerpoint files of the chapters
expanded with instructive animations and progressive presentation
of the examples for in-class use. From the Foreword: One of the
most important fields of modern physics is the study of surfaces,
key to many important industrial applications as well as XXI
century developments such as plasmonics, sensors and optical
devices. Lopez Gallardo and Castro Colin present a remarkable
vision of surface science from the physicist point of view
emphasizing the quantum mechanics and complementing chemistry-based
books. This is a great tool for the education of graduate students
of materials, nanotechnology, physics and chemistry interested in
surface science. Miguel Jose Yacaman Lutcher Brown Professor

Proceedings of a 2006 conference held in Madriad. The 11 papers
explore aspects of the archaeology of death and burial in Late
Antiquity and the early Middle Ages focusing on the Iberian
Peninsula and on Christian sites. Essays in Spanish, with one in
French and one in English.
21 papers delivered at a conference in Madrid in 2006 which look at
various aspects of the archaeology of early medieval monasticism.
The essays focus as one might expect on monasteries in Spain.
Essays mostly in Spanish with some in French and Italian.
This fourth volume (Proceedings 4) presents the results of an
international conference held at the Museo de los Origenes (Casa de
San Isidro) in December 2008. The work is divided into three parts:
Four studies on general aspects of the 'rock world' in the Iberian
Peninsula, the chronology of the caves artificially created, the
'troglodyte' in the Greco-Roman tradition, and the chronology of
rock-cut tombs. The second part looks at eleven studies of various
regions and 'rock complexes' in the Iberian Peninsula ('San Vitor',
in San Lorenzo da Barxacova, Parada del Sil, Ourense; 'El Bierzo';
the upper valley of the Ebro; 'San Martin de Albelda', in 'La
Rioja'; the middle valley of the Cidacos river; the high valley of
the Arlanza river; 'San Frutos del Duraton', Segovia; the suburbium
and territory of Ercavica in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages;
the territory of Sierra Magina; and finally, the Almagruz caves, in
Purullena, Granada. The third part examines parallels in other
Mediterranean regions, such as the 'rock city' of Matera (Italy),
the valley of the Euphrates (northern Syria); the churches built on
the rock of Lalibela (Ethiopia), and the 'rock world' in the
provinces of 'Arabia' and Palestina Tertia in Jordan."
This volume collects the results of the archaeological excavations
made in the so-called domus tancinus, in Conimbriga
(Condeixa-a-Velha, Portugal). The work in part is based the
'Spanish Archaeological Mission' interdisciplinary research project
funded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, in Portugal between 2004
and 2008. Over 5 years a Spanish and Portuguese team worked in an
intramural sector of the ancient city to understand the evolution
and transformation of a Roman domus during Late Antiquity and
beyond. The archaeological excavations show a very different
picture of Conimbriga in post-Roman times and presents further
information on the so-called 'Christian basilica' built in the
domus tancinus.
Fifteen papers from a conference held in Madrid in 2005 on the
subject of Gaul and Spain from the 5th to 7th century AD, looking
especially at evidence for the migration and influence of various
cultural groups across Europe. The contributors examine the
problems within this subject, especially interpreting the material
culture evidence, and go on to look in more detail at funerary
assemblages in both Gaul and Spain for evidence of the presence and
influence of other cultures at the time of the disintegration of
the Roman Empire. Text in Spanish, French and German.
This practical book examines how teaching media in high school
English and social studies classrooms can address major challenges
in our educational system. The authors argue that, in addition to
providing underserved youth with access to 21st-century learning
technologies, critical media education will help improve academic
literacy achievement in city schools. Critical Media Pedagogy
presents first-hand accounts of teachers who are successfully
incorporating critical media education into standards-based lessons
and units. The book begins with an analysis of how media have been
conceptualised and studied; it identifies the various ways that
youth are practicing media, as well as how these practices are
constantly increasing in sophistication. Finally, it offers
concrete examples of how to develop a rigorous, standards-based
content area curriculum that embraces new media practices and
features media production.
