This symposium, held in Argentina in March 2003, commemorates Otto
Nordenskjoeld's 1901 expedition, and pays tribute to the Swedish
and Argentinian explorers who took on the challenge of early
fieldwork in Patagonia and Antarctica. This theme is extended to
include recent fieldwork in the natural sciences in the Archipelago
of Tierra del Fuego, the Antarctic Peninsula and the sub-Antarctic
seas, and celebrates the fruitfulness of continuing
Swedish-Argentinian scientific cooperation. The symposium and
associated activities took place in the cities of Buenos Aires, La
Plata and Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego), and this book includes a
selection of the most significant contributions presented at the
meeting.
This volume contains a range of topics from quaternary vertebrate
palaeontology in Argentina and biostratigraphy of uppermost
Cenozoic in the Pampas. It determines the ice-rafted lithoclasts by
the observation on thin slides, the latter issued from the rock
sustratum of the Antarctic continent.
This volume is a compilation of papers of the final meeting of the
IGCP Project 201, Quaternary of South America. The papers deal with
a range of topics from quaternary vertebrate palaeontology in
Argentina to biostratigraphy and chronological scale of uppermost
Cenozoic in the Pampean area.
This volume is a compilation of papers that deal with
palaeoecological aspects of Argentina and Uruguay, and that derive
from the special session on the Quaternary of South America at the
XIIth INQUA International Congress held in Ottawa in 1987.
This volume comprises selected papers of the international
symposium held in Sio Paulo, 1986. The papers deal with a range of
topics from quaternary vertebrate palaeontology in Argentina and
biostratigraphy of uppermost Cenozoic in the Pampean area to
taxonomy, palaeoecology and palaeoenvironments.
This book focuses on the problems of the Quaternary in South
America and Antarctic Peninsula, with a strong emphasis in the
paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic approach. It is based on
contributions presented at the South American Regional Meeting held
in Neuquen, Argentina.

Association of Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies (AACYG). The
congress included special sessions, symposia, invited lectures and
posters on the following topics: Quaternary stratigraphy and
geochronology, paleontology (diatoms, mollusks, foraminifera,
palynology, phytoliths, paleobotany, vertebrates),
dendrochronology, climate change, paleoclimate, Pampean Quaternary
paleolimnology, paleomagnetism, environmental magnetism,
hydrogeochemical processes, geoarchaeology, geomorphology,
structural geology and neotectonics, paleosurfaces, volcanism,
geological hazards, assets, geomorphosites, and digital mapping.
The Scientific Committee of the Congress has selected the papers
published in this volume from more than 150 contributions in many
different disciplines.
These proceedings contain selected papers from the Special
Symposium, organised by the Argentine Association of Geomorphology
and Quaternary Studies in October 2017. This Symposium was held
within the frame of the 20th Argentine Geological Congress in
Tucuman, Argentina. The papers describe detailed research on
quaternary stratigraphy and geochronology, paleontology (diatoms,
mollusks, foraminifera, palynology, phytoliths, paleobotany,
vertebrates), dendrochronology, climate change, paleoclimate,
pampeano quaternary paleolimnology, paleomagnetism, environmental
magnetism, hydrogeochemical processes, geoarchaeology,
geomorphology, structural geology and neotectonics, paleosurfaces,
volcanism, risks, assets, geomorphosites, and digital mapping. This
book follows the precedent book "Advances in Geomorphology and
Quaternary Studies in Argentina" on the 6th Argentine Geomorphology
and Quaternary Studies Congress, which was edited by Jorge Rabassa
and published by Springer in 2017. It precedes a similar volume on
the 7th Congreso Argentino de Cuaternario y Geomorfologia, "Geocuar
2018", as organized by Argentine Association of Geomorphology and
Quaternary Studies (AACG). This conference was held in Puerto
Madryn, Chubut, Argentina, from 18 to 21 September 2018.
Improved dating methods have increased our ability to more
precisely determine the timing and durations of glaciations.
Utilizing glacial and loess deposits, we have compared glaciations
that occurred in North and South America in order to determine if
events are synchronous or not, to explore forcing mechanisms, and
to compare glaciations with cold periods of the Marine Oxygen
Isotope stages and the loess/paleosol records of China.
Stratigraphic sections containing a variety of glacial deposits,
some with interbedded volcanics, as well as loess deposits, were
used in reconstructing the glacial history. The Late Pleistocene
(Brunhes Chron) Last Glacial Maximum is recognized in mountain and
continental areas of North America but only in the mountains of
South America. Commonly our comparisons indicate roughly
synchronous glaciations on the two continents, whereas other
glaciations are more elusive and difficult to compare. Although our
comparisons are at low resolutions, the results suggest that
Milankovitch forcing is most likely the dominant trigger for
hemispheric glaciation modified by local factors.
This book explores a variety of heritage dialogues, from global and
specific approaches, combining different views, perceptions and
senses. Following the first volume on Latin American Heritage as
published in this book series in 2019, this new volume focuses on
music, dance and railway heritage, considering artistic,
archaeological, natural, ethnological and industrial aspects. It is
divided into four thematic sections - 1) parties and cultural
heritage, 2) railway heritage and museums, 3) archaeological
heritage and tourism, and 4) cultural landscape and tourism - and
presents chapters on a diverse range of topics, from samba and
cultural identities in Rio de Janeiro and London to the
"musealization" of railway assets, the history of Antarctic
archaeology, the value of scenic landscapes and urban memory in
Spain, and the cultural landscape of Brazil. This unique book
explores a variety of heritage dialogues, pursuing global and
specific approaches, and combining different views, perceptions and
senses, including video fragments.
This book presents extensive and new information on the
geomorphology of cratonic areas of southern South America. It
includes valuable data relating to recurrent controversies in
general geomorphology beyond the boundaries of South America and
reveals the great need to integrate many different aspects of
geomorphology in regional studies. With the focus on ancient
landscapes and especially on planation surfaces it addresses the
question of what processes could form such huge features, and how
they can be preserved for so long. Many of the papers include maps
of planation surfaces or other geomorphic units. The volume brings
together an up-to-date, state-of-the-art collection of information
on South American geomorphology, and shows beyond doubt that
geomorphology is on the same time scale as global tectonics,
biological evolution and major climate change. Some of the papers
describe ancient geomorphological features of areas that have never
been studied or published before, while others describe regions
which are totally unknown to the public. The scope of the book
extends from tropical latitudes north of the Tropic of Capricorn,
south to freezing Patagonia in the "roaring fifties", more than
3,500 km from north to south. Including over one thousand citations
from geological and geomorphological literature, this volume will
serve as a starting point for a whole new phase of studies of the
fascinating landscape history of southern South America.

This text deals with certain geological aspects of the extreme
geographical locations of South America and the Antarctic
Peninsula. Topics include: Brazil - geology and vertebrate
paleontology; pleistocene wave-built terraces of Northern Rio de
Janeiro state; and holocene coastal evolution.
This book presents the most relevant basaltic plateau exposures in
the provinces of Neuquen (northern Patagonia) and Santa Cruz
(southern Patagonia), and analyzes their geomorphological and
morphometric characteristics. The existence of wetland ecosystems
near the volcanic plateaus is quantified, thus providing indexes
that describe the quantitative relationships between these
landscape features. These indexes also make it possible to estimate
the development of these wetlands in non-surveyed areas, opening
the door for studying remote, isolated areas by means of remote
sensing images. In turn, the book proposes a numerical
classification system for this type of landscape that summarizes
the main geomorphological and hydrological
characteristics.teristics.
