This book is a comprehensive reference on ancient Egyptian
astronomy, one of the most important topics in historical
astronomy. Written by two recognized specialists-one an astronomer
trained in Egyptology and the other an Egyptologist trained in
astronomy-it synthesizes and analyses the international body of
research surrounding this ancient culture. The chapters in this
work address all major topics in the field, including Egyptian
cosmogony and worldview, timekeeping devices and calendars,
landscapes and skyscapes, astronomy-influenced architecture,
chronology and more. Each chapter includes an introduction, an
overview of the existing documentation on the subject, a critical
discussion of ongoing debates and questions, and a presentation of
state-of-the-art research. Straddling the line between Egyptology
and astronomy, this multidisciplinary book will appeal to any
scholar or specialist interested in studying ancient Egyptian
astronomy.
After the death of the last of the ramessides, Smendes, Lord of
Tanis, proclaimed himself Pharaoh, founded the XXI dynasty and
initiated one of the most unknown but attractive periods in the
history of Egypt, the Third Intermediate Period. This book deals
with the burials in the Valley of the Kings in the 21st - 30th
Dynasties of Egypt, when they were not used by the rulers anymore.
Through detailed investigation of the tombs and the hieroglyphes,
the author has tried to identify the individuals buried in these
tombs. The royal New Kingdom tombs were taken as a reference point
and a comparison with the texts and iconography was established.
This enables a better understandong of the traditions that followed
in the Third Intermediate Period and naturally the changes that had
taken place in the choice of the religious compendiums and
representations associated with this period.
This work ('The High Priests of Amun in the 'wHm mswt' Era and the
Twenty-First Dynasty') explores the chronological, genealogical and
historical controversies from a very dark episode in ancient Egypt:
the period at the end of the rule of Ramesses XI and the beginning
of the Third Intermediate Period (XXI Dynasty). The research
focuses on the role played by the Theban High Priests of Amun - a
field of study so far neglected by other Egyptologists. In Spanish
with an extended English summary.
