Britain's German Army at War
The Hessian became something of a 'bogey-man' to the revolutionary
period American citizen. Already outraged at the treatment they had
received at the hands of the government of the country which they
could not fail to regard as a motherland, this new enemy-a
veritable viper in the bosom-had the temerity to unleash not only
savages upon them, but foreign troops-foreign speaking
mercenaries-to subdue its own aggrieved people. This is the stuff
that good propaganda is made of and unfortunately, in wartime,
events will inevitably occur that underline the brutality of the
enemy irrespective of his hue or uniform. Mercenary service was
very well known and widely practiced up to and during the 18th
century, though the Americas had little opportunity to see anything
of it to that date. Furthermore, a German sat on the throne of
England and the young men of central Europe offered the Hanoverian
household military service until the Napoleonic Wars when the
King's German Legion became highly regarded for its performance in
both the Peninsular War and during the Waterloo campaign. This
book, written by a German historian, seeks to redress the balance
of popular opinion by a re-examination of the activities of German
troops under British command during the American War of
Independence. Naturally, it is a partial view, but readers may be
surprised to learn of the deeds of these troops who, for all that
may be said against them, were acknowledged by both sides to be the
finest of soldiers.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each

This book reevaluates fiction devoted to the postwar American
suburb, examining the way these works imagine suburbia as a
communal structure designed to advance a particular American
identity. Postmodern Suburban Spaces surveys works by both
canonical chroniclers of the middle class experience, such as
Richard Yates and John Cheever, and those who reflect suburbia's
demographic reality, including Gloria Naylor and Chang-rae Lee, to
uncover a surprising reconfiguration of the suburban experience.
Tracing major forms of suburban associations - racial divisions,
property lines, the family, and ethnic fealty - these works depict
a different mode of interaction than the stereotypical white picket
fences. Joseph George draws from philosophers such as Emmanuel
Levinas and Roberto Esposito to argue that these fictions assert a
critical hospitality that frustrates the limited forms of
association on which suburbia is based. This fiction, in turn,
posits an ethical form of community that comes about when people
share space together.
The Good Life and the Greater Good in a Global Context offers a
timely contribution to the debates about the good life that
surround us every day in the media, politics, the humanities, and
social sciences. The authors' examine the relationship between the
good life and the greater good as represented across different
genres, media, cultures, and disciplines. This enables them to
develop a framework of values that transcends the overly rational
and individualistic model of the good life advanced by
neoliberalism and the "happiness industry." Thus, over and against
normative conceptualizations of the good life that reduce meaning
to money, creativity to consumption, and compassion to self-help,
the contributors propose an ethically charged philosophy of living
that views the care for the self, for the other, and for the planet
as the catalysts of true human flourishing. In addition to
recovering the original usage of "the good life" from classical
thought-especially the Aristotelian understanding of eudaimonia as
living well and doing well-the essays gathered here highlight its
entanglement with distinctly modern ideas of happiness, wellbeing,
flourishing, progress, revolution, democracy, the American Dream,
utopia, and sustainability. As such, the essays capture the breadth
and depth of the conversation about the good life that is of
central importance to how we relate to the past, engage the
present, and envision the future.

This volume foregrounds the importance of regional cooperation in
the context of food security challenges in South Asia. South Asia
holds the key to global achievement of SDG targets of ending hunger
and malnutrition - it accounts for nearly one-third of
food-insecure people on the planet, with every third child
suffering from stunting due to malnutrition. Similar food
preferences, production systems, and the transboundary nature of
agrarian ecosystems call for coordinated action by South Asian
countries, complementing national actions dealing with food
security challenges. In this volume, leading experts discuss the
perspectives of key South Asian countries in leveraging regional
cooperation for addressing food security challenges and reflect on
the potential of cooperative actions in different areas. The book
proposes a ten-point regional policy agenda covering cooperation
for combatting climate change, regional trade liberalization,
operationalization of regional food reserves, leveraging
technology, sharing of good practices, regional institution
building, coordinated positions in multilateral trade negotiations,
addressing trans-boundary outbreak of livestock diseases,
strengthening food safety standards, and the management of shared
natural resources. A key volume on accomplishing SDGs in the South
Asian context, this book will be of immense interest to policy
makers, researchers, and development practitioners. It is also
essential reading for scholars and researchers in the areas of
development studies, South Asia studies, food security, environment
and sustainability.

Deepen your understanding of human-computer interaction (HCI) in
game development and learn how to develop video games that grab
players and don't let them go. This book explores HCI design in
computer games to maximize collaborative and interactive functions.
You'll first gain a basic introduction to fundamental concepts and
practices of HCI before diving into the fundamental concepts of
game interface design and technology. You'll learn how to design a
gaming interface through practical examples using Python. This is
followed by a brief look at how HCI can offer immersive gaming
experiences for players and a review of key elements such as
interface, usability, user-centered design, and user interface in
terms of efficacy. You will also learn how to implement usability
aspects in gaming interfaces with examples using Python.
Additionally, the book discusses major challenges that game
publishers and developers face, and how they can be resolved using
HCI techniques. The question of playability is reviewed throughout
the game production process. After working through this book's
practical examples, you'll have the knowledge required to begin
developing compelling, can't-put-the-controller down games of your
own. What You'll Learn Master HCI tools and methodologies
