This book is specially designed for tutoring in psychological
skills, such as decision-making, conflict-resolution, emotional
regulation, kindness, courage, and others. The programmed format is
designed for a tutor and student to read together, using "alternate
reading" of sections and answering a comprehension probe after each
section. As they work through the manual, they learn how to do
psychological skills exercises. The exercises in this book are
meant to improve psychological strength in the same way that
physical exerices improve muscular strength. Most of them involve
practicing some desirable pattern of thought, feeling, or behavior
with hypothetical situations.
This is an unusual math book: it is meant to be read aloud by a
tutor and a student. It consists primarily of explanations, in
words, of important math concepts. Reading comprehension questions
rather than math problems check whether the reader is
understanding. The learner who uses it practices reading
comprehension in the subject area of math. This book starts with
very basic ideas such as place value, sets, and addition, and moves
through concepts of algebra. The format of small sections with a
"comprehension probe" after each is custom made for tutoring, but
also suited for the individual reader.
Success in schoolwork contributes greatly not only to career and
economic good fortune, but also to happiness and mental health.
This book teaches students the strategies that maximize the chance
of academic success. It is written in interactive format: divided
into brief sections with a comprehension question following each
one; this format is ideal for the student to work through with a
tutor or parent.
Task-switching means alternating among two or more sets of
directions for responding to similar stimuli. In order to do
task-switching well, one must use part of working memory to do a
task, and another part to hold in mind what task to do.
Task-switching is one of the executive functions thought to be
important in making and executing plans and attaining goals. This
skill appears to be especially difficult for people with ADHD.
Medication used for ADHD appears to improve task-switching, but
practice slso appears to lead to such improvement. This manual
provides an explanation of current thinking about task-switching,
in simple language. It tells how to do several games for
task-switching practice. It also provides many worksheets whereby
students can practice task-switching skills while also practicing
useful academic skills: math facts, math word problems, and
word-reading. The first author is a child and adolescent
psychiatrist and adjunct faculty member at Drexel University and
the University of Pittsburgh. The second author, his daughter, is a
student of psychology at Cornell University.
This book is meant for tutors, classroom teachers, homeschooling
parents, and anyone else who wishes to help someone acquire one of
the most precious gifts attainable - the ability to read, and to
read well. Learning to read should never be frustrating. This book
presents a sequence of challenges, a hierarchy of tasks, arranged
so that each prepares the learner for the next one. If at any stage
the learner encounters too much frustration, the instructor drops
back on the hiearchy. From the point where the learner can be
successful, they work forward. The instructor celebrates every
success along the way. The process can be a joyous, happy
experience for both teacher and student. This book is the product
of countless revisions of prior manuals, refined over the course of
some twenty-five years of experience and research. The methods
described here are applicable across the widest range of abilities,
from gifted students to dyslexic ones. Joseph M. Strayhorn, Jr.,
M.D. is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has had a special
interest in the learning process. He is an Adjunct Associate
Professor of Psychiatry at Drexel University School of Medicine and
the University of Pittsburgh. He has been on the editorial boards
of School Psychology Quarterly and the Journal of the American
Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He has conducted
several research projects on reading instruction, including a
method of telephone tutoring in reading. He is a homeschooling
father who has taught two daughters to read using these methods.
This manual is designed to help people think rationally about
provocations and conflict situations. It defines concepts that help
the reader think more effectively about the sorts of situations
that often trigger rage or violence. Through the exercises
prescribed and modeled here, the reader can build up habits of calm
response to provocations and conflicts. The book is divided into
several hundred sections of around a hundred words, with each
followed by a comprehension question; the format is meant to lend
itself maximally to a tutoring environment.
