‘Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because
of his faith. He was even called the friend of God.’ (James 2.23)
Abraham is the only character in the Bible to be described in that
way, and John C. Lennox shows us why. Throughout the Bible Abraham
is seen as a pivotal figure in God’s plan of salvation, and in
Friend of God Professor Lennox helps us to see through the mists of
the past to the real flesh-and-blood man, with all his strengths
and weaknesses. This study guide to Friend of God is packed with
thought-provoking suggestions for private reflection or group
discussion, drawing out the many ways in which the story of Abraham
can teach us how to live faithfully in a world of religious doubt
and scepticism today.
'Then King Darius sent this message to the people of every race and
nation and language throughout the world: "I decree that everyone
throughout my kingdom should tremble with fear before the God of
Daniel. For he is the living God, and he will endure forever."'
(Daniel 6.25-6) The book of Daniel tells the story of four teenage
friends, born in the tiny state of Judah about twenty-six centuries
ago, who were captured by Nebuchadnezzar, emperor of Babylon.
Although forced to live in exile, Daniel and his friends remained
faithful to the one true God. But they did not simply treat their
devotion to God as a private matter; they maintained a high-profile
witness in a pluralistic society that was highly antagonistic to
their faith. That is why their story has such a powerful message
for us. What was it that gave that ancient foursome, Daniel and his
three friends, the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at
great risk, to swim against the flow? This study guide to Against
the Flow is packed with thought-provoking suggestions for private
reflection or group discussion, drawing out the many ways in which
the story of Daniel can teach us how to live faithfully in a world
of religious doubt and scepticism today.
In early 2000, Mere Christianity was named by Christianity Today as
the most influential Christian book of the Twentieth Century. But
many people today are reluctant to read this magnificent classic.
Why is this? I think many people are intimidated by C. S. Lewis'
academic credentials and impressive resume--they think they might
not be up to his intellectual arguments. And this is simply not
true. It is a challenging read to be sure, but most people can,
with a bit of effort, understand the book and be encouraged by it.
With Lewis' book and these discussion and study notes, you'll be
able to follow these important concepts and enjoy discussing Lewis'
ideas and answering my questions--perhaps with a group of friends.
Is the biblical description of the Creation found in Genesis
1:1-2:3 hopelessly at odds with what we know from science about the
universe and planet Earth as many people today believe? Absolutely
not In fact there is a high degree of conformity between the
biblical narrative and the scientific evidence. How then did such
widespread misunderstanding come about? Possibly the best answer is
that there is no simple, clear statement of how the biblical
account meshes with scientific facts. That is, there is no
description of how the scientific evidence maps onto the elements
of the biblical Creation narrative in a way that is true to science
and understandable to the non-scientific inquirer. My goal is
provide just such a description in this book
Given the vital importance of the devotional life for the follower
of Jesus, one would expect that the vast majority of believers
would be experiencing exciting times with the Lord through His
word. Yet this is simply not the case. Many would admit that their
devotional times are not what they should be. I am personally
satisfied that it is in the devotional times that we cultivate our
relationship with Jesus and that it is this relationship that is
the difference between just understanding the facts of Christianity
and having a vital, dynamic relationship with the Lord of the
universe and being invited to understand His plans and be involved
in His work in His Creation.
A number of years ago, I became concerned over the number of young
assistant professors who were not successfully navigating the
tenure process. I saw a number of talented people who experienced
what for an academic is major failure-yet was preventable. They
were not approaching the tenure process in the right way, they did
not have a good strategy for negotiating the process, they were
misallocating their time and effort, and I thought perhaps some
good fatherly advice from an older professor could be beneficial.
When universities do offer seminars on how to make tenure, they
really don't address the kinds of things I think are helpful to
young professors. They cover information from the faculty handbook,
but they can't say some of the hard things that I wanted to say;
things which really need to be said. In this book, I present a
sure-fire strategy for earning tenure, which will get you off to a
strong start in academe, whether you are at a major state or
private university or a liberal arts college.
When I finished reading this great book for the first time, I had
highlighted most of the book, and I immediately moved it into my
all-time top five books. The Call should be required reading for
every serious follower of Jesus. One cannot live purposefully in
life without answering the Call of Jesus of Nazareth. I spent
twenty-five years as a university professor making difficult topics
easier so that students could understand. With these study notes
and Guinness' wonderful and insightful book, you'll be able to
follow these important concepts, and enjoy discussing and answering
the questions with others.
The parallels between an audience with a head of state and an
audience with the King of the universe are innumerable; we have
mentioned only a few. There are also many important contrasts. For
example, we are invited into God's presence and, unlike a head of
state, any time is convenient with the King of kings. Furthermore,
as His child, you are extremely important to Him; no request is too
small as to be trivial or too large as to be impossible for Him.
How, then can this way of thinking about prayer and this book help
you in making your prayer life more effective? There are several
things this book can accomplish. It can help you to organize your
prayer requests and to pray consistently for specific requests
until God answers them or removes the burden from your heart. It
will give you a written record of some of the things God is
accomplishing in your life and will stimulate you to thank Him for
specific answers to specific prayers.
