For obvious reasons, the abolition of slavery in the United States
is the most prominent topic in my narrative; but I have freely
interspersed observations on other subjects of interest and
importance, as they came under consideration.... -from the Preface
All but forgotten in antislavery history of the United States, this
powerful testimonial, by a British visitor to American shores,
offers an intimate look through an outsider's eye at the South's
peculiar institution. Sturges, a British Quaker and activist, draws
brief portraits of prominent American abolitionists and, unlike
many similar contemporary works, does not ignore the contributions
of women as social reformers in pre-Civil War American society.
Whether it's relating the tale of a runaway slave and her baby sold
back into slavery or addressing the everyday indignities suffered
by even free black Americans, this 1842 work seethes with the
passion and indignation that would eventually see the end of
slavery in the United States. British philanthropist and
abolitionist JOSEPH STURGE (1793-1859) also wrote The West Indies
in 1837, an account of slavery in the islands.
Joseph Sturge (1793 1859) was an English Quaker who was influential
in campaigning for the abolition of slavery in the British empire
and founded the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in 1839.
Having visited the West Indies in 1834, he travelled to the United
States in 1841 to examine the slavery question there firsthand, and
to lend his support to the American abolition movement by sharing
his experiences of how success was achieved elsewhere. His account
of his visit, and of the feelings and opinions of the American
campaigners he met, is the subject of this 1842 book, which he
hoped would encourage activists around the world and promote
understanding among them.
Joseph Sturge (1793 1859) and his co-author, Thomas Harvey (1812
1884), were Quaker philanthropists concerned with the treatment of
former slaves. Both men had reservations about the 'apprenticeship'
system introduced by the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act, and between
1836 and 1837 they visited the West Indies to assess the usefulness
of the system in action. Their book was first published in 1838,
and a second, revised edition (reissued here) came out in the same
year. It contains Sturge and Harvey's observations on the failures
of apprenticeship. Organised by island and presented in the form of
a diary, this detailed account of the lives and living conditions
of former slaves illustrates the inherent flaws in the
apprenticeship system. This volume proved very influential in the
campaign to abolish the system, and provides valuable first-hand
information on the contemporary social conditions in the West
Indies, and attitudes to former slaves.

One of my fellow passengers had recently been traveling in the
southern States, and showed me a letter given to him as a curiosity
at the post office at Charleston, South Carolina, which was
addressed by a slave to her husband, but from insufficient
direction had never reached its destination. It was to convey the
tidings that she was about to be sold to the South, and begging
him, in simple and affecting terms, to come and see her, as they
would never meet again. Another of the passengers, who had also
been a fellow voyager with my friend Joseph John Gurney, had
recently travelled in Texas.
