J.M.W. Turner is one of the most influential and important British
artists of all time. His watercolours, with their extraordinary
effects of shifting light and dramatic cloudscapes, are especially
highly regarded. This book reveals the secrets of his technique for
the first time, allowing watercolourists to try them out for
themselves. For the first time, this book reveals the secrets of
Turner's technique, allowing present-day watercolourists to try
them out themselves. There is an accessible introduction that
explores Turner's life and career and the materials he used to
achieve the masterpieces we know and love today. The book then goes
on to list the modern materials the twenty-first century
watercolourist will need if they aspire to take on similar subject
matter. Successive chapters look at a particular theme, such as
Sky, Water, Trees, Buildings, People, Animals, Sunrise, Moonlight
and Fire, illustrating each with one of Turner's works. Expert
contemporary watercolour artists then explain, step-by-step, how to
paint a version of that particular picture and how to use the
techniques learnt to paint other compositions. With a glossary of
technical terms, high quality colour reproductions and backed by
the authority of Tate, the world centre for Turner scholarship,
this is a must-buy purchase for all lovers of J.M.W. Turner and of
watercolour painting.
In October 2004, the Art Technological Source Research study group
held a symposium at the Instituut Collectie Nederland, Amsterdam:
Approaching the Art of the Past: Sources & Reconstructions. It
was held to discuss the role of source research and the use of
reconstructions in the field of art technological research.
This refereed volume contains the proceedings of a conference
'Conservation Science' in Edinburgh in May 2002 -organised by the
Institute of Conservation Science, COST Action G8 'Non-destructive
Analysis and Testing of Museum Objects' and the National Museums of
Scotland. The book is divided into three sections. The first,
Preventive Conservation, includes contributions on the
deterioration of historic textiles; the movement of painted wooden
panels; dimensional changes in bark paintings; showcase
environments; particles and dust in museums etc. This is followed
by the section on Conservation Methods, which includes laser
cleaning; chromatography; adhesives for textiles; mortars for
mosaics and corrosion inhibitors for iron artefacts. In the final
section, Non-Destructive Testing, the reader is taken into a world
of acronyms - XRF, SEM, LA-ICPMS, PIXE, THM-GCMS, ATR, CPSEM-EDX -
while some more easily written techniques including
dendrochronology, colorimetry, eddy current testing, accelerated
light testing, neutron radiography etc. are discussed. These
techniques are applied to a range of materials - from Rembrandt to
Roman coins; from aero engines to alkyd resins; from hats to
hallmarks; manuscripts to mercury.
This volume consists of papers presented at the first conference
devoted to preparatory layers used by artists
A classic medium, watercolor is practiced by many but mastered by
few. This accessible and clear workbook is both a practical guide
and an informative history. Beginning with a "1-day course," the
chapters cover technique, equipment, general theory, painting plein
air, and conservation. The authors also examine the work of
watercolor masters, among them Claude Lorrain,
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, John Constable, J. M. W. Turner, and
John Ruskin. Each chapter includes photographs and helpful examples
of works in progress, explanations of methods, and how-to
demonstra-tions. Designed for those who have not picked up a
paintbrush since high-school art class as well as more seasoned
practitioners, this guide is a must-have for anyone who wants to
start out in watercolors, become a more assured and better artist,
or simply gain a new understanding of the great watercolorists.
Second volume of conference papers from the Institute of
Conservation Science.
