Gender Politics and the Pursuit of Competitiveness in Malaysia - Women on Board (Paperback): Juanita Elias Gender Politics and the Pursuit of Competitiveness in Malaysia - Women on Board (Paperback)
Juanita Elias
R1,282 Discovery Miles 12 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is concerned with how the pursuit of national economic competitiveness by states has come to be intertwined with a globalised gender agenda-one in which women and the household economy are seen as 'untapped' resources. In many East and Southeast Asian economies, competitiveness and the dangers of the middle-income trap dominate economic policy agendas: states' commitments to gender equality goals are frequently framed around 'business case' logics in which women's empowerment and women's increased engagement in the productive economy is linked to the national economic project of building and enhancing competitiveness. This book looks to the case of Malaysia in order to assess how the increasingly dominant view that gender equality is 'smart economics' plays out in practice. Drawing upon extensive case study research and interview data, the book hones in on the complex gender politics that are at work within government initiatives that seek to enhance competitiveness via increasing women's labour force participation, efforts to strengthen marriage and family life, and attempts to boost women's entrepreneurialism and status within the corporate world. Providing an account of the gender politics at work within ongoing processes of state transformation in Asia, this book will appeal to researchers and students in gender studies, Southeast Asian studies, International Political Economy and public policy.

Handbook on the International Political Economy of Gender (Hardcover): Juanita Elias, Adrienne Roberts Handbook on the International Political Economy of Gender (Hardcover)
Juanita Elias, Adrienne Roberts
R6,498 Discovery Miles 64 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive Handbook showcases the burgeoning and cutting edge research that has come to constitute the study of gender and International Political Economy (IPE). It surveys the diversity of contemporary feminist IPE research, exploring a range of different theoretical and methodological traditions and reviewing the broad empirical scope of this research. The Handbook also critically interrogates the intersections and points of tension between the different disciplines that have inspired contemporary approaches.Expert contributors offer insights into how to the categories of ?masculine? and ?feminine? have been established and maintained globally, while also documenting and challenging the privileging of the former over the latter in different sites and spaces. They further show how gender power relations are shaped by race, nationality, sexuality, class, and more. The Handbook explores and demonstrates how gender operates as a relation of social power in the global political economy. The Handbook on the International Political Economy of Gender will appeal to undergraduate and post-graduate students of politics and international relations, security studies, development studies, economics, and gender and queer studies, as well as policymakers and practitioners interested in issues of global (in)equality and development.

Feminist Global Political Economies of the Everyday (Paperback): Juanita Elias, Adrienne Roberts Feminist Global Political Economies of the Everyday (Paperback)
Juanita Elias, Adrienne Roberts
R1,280 Discovery Miles 12 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection interrogates the multifaceted ways in which global transformations are constituted by deeply gendered socio-economic practices at the level of the 'everyday'. It brings feminist insights to bear on the emerging International Political Economy (IPE) debates about 'the everyday', showing how gender is key to understanding how political economy is enacted and performed at the local level, by non-elites, and via various cultural practices. Drawing on 'everyday' IPE and a longer-standing body of feminist scholarship that documents and theorizes the mutually constitutive nature of, on the one hand, global markets, and on the other, households, families, relations of social reproduction and gendered socio-economic practices, this collection charts the lived realities of people and communities across a wide range of sites and spaces of the global political economy. It considers how globalizing capitalism affects and is in turn affected by Argentine sex workers, Nepalese private security contractors, Canadian call centre workers, Southeast Asian domestic workers, workers and players in British bingo halls, working class households in the UK, and much more. It demonstrates, through detailed empirical research, that a gender lens is crucial for understanding how, and on what terms, individuals and households are becoming ever more enmeshed in capitalist social relations, and how they actively and creatively resist these processes. The chapters originally published as a special issue in Globalizations.

James Brassett, Juanita Elias, Lena Rethel, Ben Richardson
R1,220 Discovery Miles 12 200 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

* Do we work for social media? * Why do we go into debt? * How is desire manufactured in fast fashion? * How are our diets governed? * Who owns what in the sharing economy? I-PEEL: The International Political Economy of Everyday Life provides a new introduction to the field of IPE by locating it in our daily experiences. By using topics such as social media, debt, food, and clothes as thematic entry points, this textbook shows how concepts from IPE can be used to understand and question the world around us. Eight core chapters each start with a discussion of an everyday object or practice linked to that topic, including social media influencing, student debt, chocolate, and fast fashion. From there the chapters open out to discuss broader questions that speak to the core themes of IPE and its study of power, wealth, and global capitalism. Each chapter ends with a pair of learning activities, such as creating your own meme (chapter 8, Humour), to help apply what you have read. These are accompanied by student-voice podcasts, in which current IPE students discuss how they approached the activity. Developed by the creators of the popular teaching tool www.i-peel.org: I-PEEL: The International Political Economy of Everyday Life is a ground-breaking, exciting, and engaging new approach to IPE that places you at the centre of knowledge production. The Everyday Political Economy of Southeast Asia (Paperback): Juanita Elias, Lena Rethel The Everyday Political Economy of Southeast Asia (Paperback)
Juanita Elias, Lena Rethel
R1,163 Discovery Miles 11 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this empirically rich collection of essays, a team of leading international scholars explore the way that economic transformation is sustained and challenged by everyday practices across Southeast Asia. Drawing together a body of interdisciplinary scholarship, the authors explore how the emergence of more marketized forms of economic policy-making in Southeast Asia impacts everyday life. The book's twelve chapters address topics such as domestic migration, trade union politics in Myanmar, mining in the Philippines, halal food in Singapore, Islamic finance in Malaysia, education reform in Indonesia, street vending in Malaysia, regional migration between Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia, and Southeast Asian domestic workers in Hong Kong. This collection not only enhances understandings of the everyday political economies at work in specific Southeast Asian sites, but makes a major theoretical contribution to the development of an everyday political economy approach in which perspectives from developing economies and non-Western actors are taken seriously.
