Photography in Africa - Ethnographic Perspectives (Hardcover): Richard Vokes Photography in Africa - Ethnographic Perspectives (Hardcover)
Richard Vokes; Contributions by Chris Wingfield, Christopher Morton, Corinne Kratz, Erin Haney, …
R2,147 Discovery Miles 21 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gives an ethnographic account of the complexities of the use of photography in Africa, both historically and in contemporary practice. This collection of studies in African photography examines, through a series of empirically rich historical and ethnographic cases, the variety of ways in which photographs are produced, circulated, and engaged across a range of social contexts. In so doing, it elucidates the distinctive characteristics of African photographic practices and cultures, vis-a-vis those of other forms of 'vernacular photography' worldwide. In addition, these studies develop areflexive turn, examining the history of academic engagement with these African photographic cultures, and reflecting on the distinctive qualities of the ethnographic method as a means for studying such phenomena. The volumecritically engages current debates in African photography and visual anthropology. First, it extends our understanding of the variety of ways in which both colonial and post-colonial states in Africa have used photography as a means for establishing, and projecting, their authority. Second, it moves discussion of African photography away from an exclusive focus on the role of the 'the studio' and looks at the circulations through which the studios' products - the photographs themselves - later pass as artefacts of material culture. Last, it makes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between photography and ethnographic research methods, as these have been employed in Africa. Richard Vokes is Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and author of Ghosts of Kanungu

Aston(r) Postural Assessment - A New Paradigm for Observing and Evaluating Body Patterns (Paperback, 2 Ed): Judith Aston Aston(r) Postural Assessment - A New Paradigm for Observing and Evaluating Body Patterns (Paperback, 2 Ed)
Judith Aston
R1,569 Discovery Miles 15 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a brand new edition of a successful book which was one of the first to encourage movement therapists and bodyworkers to look at the postural causes of movement problems, rather than focusing treatment just on the physical symptoms. The book explains how to measure and assess posture and provides tools for doing so. The author introduces her unique perspective on body mechanics - Aston-Mechanics(R) - a departure from the standard model of body posture, and provides many opportunities to practice observation and analytical skills based on this paradigm. Key features The author is widely recognized as a pioneer in the art and science of kinetics for her discovery of the Aston(R) Paradigm and consequent development of the many forms of movement, bodywork, fitness and ergonomics of Aston(R) Kinetics. She created and developed Aston(R) Kinetics as an educational system of movement and bodywork. Rather than enforcing physical symmetry, Aston(R) Kinetics seeks to recognize the asymmetries that are natural to a person's body and to achieve the best movement possible. Her acute ability to 'see' the body in stillness and motion and to train others to see, move and exercise, established her discipline of bodywork and movement training that is known as Aston(R) Kinetics. The book is highly illustrated with over 300 photographs and 150 line drawings. All the illustrations are new for this edition.

The history of documentary has been one of adaptation and change, as docu-mentarists have harnessed the affordances of emerging technology. In the last decade interactive documentaries (i-docs) have become established as a new field of practice within non-fiction storytelling. Their various incarnations are now a focus at leading film festivals (IDFA DocLab, Tribeca Storyscapes, Sheffield DocFest), major international awards have been won, and they are increasingly the subject of academic study. This anthology looks at the creative practices, purposes and ethics that lie behind these emergent forms. Expert contributions, case studies and interviews with major figures in the field address the production processes that lie behind interactive documentary, as well as the political, cultural and geographic contexts in which they are emerging and the media ecology that supports them. Taking a broad view of interactive documentary as any work which engages with 'the real' by employing digital interactive technology, this volume addresses a range of platforms and environments, from web-docs and virtual reality to mobile media and live performance. It thus explores the challenges that face interactive documentary practitioners and scholars, and proposes new ways of producing and engaging with interactive factual content.
