My dog understands me! At least, many dog owners think so. New
scientific studies actually show that dogs understand a lot about
us humans. For example, they can figure out what humans can and
cannot see. Some dogs can even distinguish large numbers of toys by
name, like Rico, the internationally famous Border collie. But do
dogs also understand our emotions? Can they grasp cause and effect
relationships? What fascinates us humans about dogs? Is it only the
proverbial 'puppy dog eyes' that make dogs look sympathetic? Or is
it the fact that these animals have grown very well-attuned to
humans and are willing to cooperate with them? In a total of ten
chapters, Juliane Brauer and Juliane Kaminski present the results
of the most important scientific studies of the last twenty years
on dog cognition.
Historicizing both emotions and politics, this open access book
argues that the historical work of emotion is most clearly
understood in terms of the dynamics of institutionalization. This
is shown in twelve case studies that focus on decisive moments in
European and US history from 1800 until today. Each case study
clarifies how emotions were central to people's political
engagement and its effects. The sources range from parliamentary
buildings and social movements, to images and speeches of
presidents, from fascist cemeteries to the International Criminal
Court. Both the timeframe and the geographical focus have been
chosen to highlight the increasingly participatory character of
nineteenth- and twentieth-century politics, which is inconceivable
without the work of emotions.

English summary: The volume links current emotions research in the
disciplines of cultural science and history with the fields of
historical culture and historical didactics. By doing so it works
its way through the fundamental paradigms of historical didactics.
It thereby focuses on categorial concepts such as the historical
formation of meaning, empathy, historical imagination or
narrativity, historical culture, historical awareness and
historical identity. The contributions on theories, fundamental
terms, different places and media of historical learning examine
the question where emotions can be positioned in historical
learning processes, that is to say, how they can pre-structure and
guide encounters with the past. Standards are formulated by which
future historical learning can orient itself with and about
emotions. The contributions are conceived as a basis and stimulus
for further discussion in research, teaching and practice.German
description: Der Band vernetzt die gegenwartige
kulturwissenschaftliche und geschichtswissenschaftliche
Emotionsforschung mit geschichtskulturellen und
geschichtsdidaktischen Arbeitsfeldern. Die Beitrage arbeiten sich
also mit den grundlegenden Paradigmen der Geschichtsdidaktik. In
systematischen Ort Emotionen in historischen Lernprozessen
verstanden. The volume links current emotions research in the
