A classic book of ceremonies and services according to the Western
Rite, for all services other than the Eucharist which a parish
priest would normally carry out. It contains orders of service for
baptism, marriage, funerals, sick visiting, home communion and
penance, as well as numerous blessing ceremonies for buildings,
objects and events. It may be used alongside Common Worship and The
Book of Common Prayer, and includes an appendix of prayers for a
wide range of needs and occasions. Material from the Western Rite
and the Book of Common Prayer is printed side-by-side, making this
a useful resource for priests and parishioners who prefer ancient
rites which pre-date the splits and divisions brought about by the
Reformation.
welcome this book - as a contribution to the important task of
understanding the fundamental unity of the one Roman Rite of the
Mass, even when expressed in two Forms.' --Archbishop Vincent
Nichols, in the Foreword The celebration of the Latin or Tridentine
mass, otherwise known as the Extraordinary Form, is an increasingly
common practice in Roman Catholic churches throughout the world.
Once the only rite in use which Catholics around the world knew
from childhood, its usage ended with the Second Vatican Council's
ruling that liturgy should be celebrated in peoples' own languages.
The Latin mass thus became the preserve of various traditionalist
societies. Two years ago the Pope declared that the celebration of
the Latin mass was to be restored and regularly offered alongside
the modern mass. Today, priests trained in the modern rite are
learning how to celebrate the Latin mass and there is a demand for
liturgical resources to accompany it, especially as it follows a
different calendar and lectionary. It has an introduction by Mgr
Anthony Conlon, Chaplain of the Latin Mass Society, one of a number
of societies dedicated to promoting the use of the Extraordinary
Rite
When the Pope visits Britain this coming September, John Henry
Newman - a leading Anglican and founding figure of the Oxford
Movement who converted to Rome - will be beatified, the first
English saint since the 17th century. This portrait of a saint in
the making is based on Newman's great poem, The Dream of Gerontius.
Through its seven movements, it traces Newman's path through life -
his lasting influence in the Church of England, his building of the
church at Littlemore, his conversion, his vision and his founding
of an English Oratory, the writing of the Dream, and the course of
his beatification. Throughout, Newman's own words and advice on
sanctity will be featured offering a timeless guide to holy living
today.
This is a quality prayer book in the tradition of Catholic primers
and devotional manuals. For each day of the year there is a
scripture reading and an inspiring example from the lives of the
many men and women in history who have made holiness visible lead
into prayers of thanksgiving and intercession. Each month has a
particular focus and is introduced by the leading Catholic
laywoman, the Duchess of Norfolk. The foreword is provided by
Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor.
