The German Pietists of Provincial Pennsylvania (Paperback): Julius F Sachse The German Pietists of Provincial Pennsylvania (Paperback)
Julius F Sachse
R1,206 Discovery Miles 12 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published by the author in 1895, The German Pietists of Provincial Pennsylvania narrates the history of the early Germans of various sects and congregations who settled in Pennsylvania starting at the end of the seventeenth century, with a particular focus on a group of German Pietist mystics who emigrated to America in 1694 to pursue the freedom to practice their religion. The book details Pietism's origins in Europe, Pietists' beliefs and practices, and the Pietists' relationships with other religious groups, like the Quakers, Lutherans, and Jansenites. The book is a product of meticulous archival work and research, and it includes numerous references to and facsimile pages from rare source material. Sachse also provides a comprehensive look at the activities of well-known figures including Johannes Kelpius, Daniel Falkner, Johann Jacob Zimmerman, and Benjamin Furly.

The Diarium of Magister Johannes Kelpius (Paperback): Johannes Kelpius The Diarium of Magister Johannes Kelpius (Paperback)
Johannes Kelpius; Notes by Julius F Sachse
R649 Discovery Miles 6 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The radical German Pietist Johannes Kelpius traveled to Philadelphia in 1694 with a group of early German immigrants to America. He settled on the banks of Wissahickon Creek, where he led a small separatist religious community based in esotericism and mysticism, inspired by the teachings of Johann Jacob Zimmerman.

The aura of mystery surrounding Kelpius is heightened by the scarcity of his written record, of which his Diarium remains one of the few surviving texts. The Diarium provides a detailed account of his ten-week Atlantic voyage, relating stories of the difficult passage to America while offering a unique look into Kelpius's spiritual vision. In addition to a translation of his diary, this volume, originally published by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1917, contains translated selections from letters sent by Kelpius during the fourteen years he lived in Philadelphia prior to his death in 1708. Also included are facsimile pages of his prayer book A Short, Easy, and Comprehensive Method of Prayer.
