This book presents a life-oriented approach, which is an
interdisciplinary methodology proposed for cross-sectoral urban
policy decisions such as transport, health, and energy policies.
Improving people's quality of life (QOL) is one of the common goals
of various urban policies on the one hand, while QOL is closely
linked with a variety of life choices on the other. The
life-oriented approach argues that life choices in different
domains (e.g., residence, neighborhood, health, education, work,
family life, leisure and recreation, finance, and travel behavior)
are not independent of one another, and ignorance of and inability
to understand interdependent life choices may result in a failure
of consensus building for policy decisions. The book provides
evidence about behavioral interdependencies among life domains
based on both extensive literature reviews and case studies
covering a broad set of life choices. This work further illustrates
interbehavioral analysis frameworks with respect to various life
domains, along with a rich set of future research directions. This
book deals with life choices in a relatively general way. Thus, it
can serve not only as a reference for research, but also as a
textbook for teaching and learning in varied behavior-related
disciplines.
This book aims to provide a good understanding of and perspective
on sustainable transport in Asia by focusing on economic,
environmental, and social sustainability. It is widely acknowledged
that the current situation and trends in transport are not always
sustainable in Asia, due in part to the fast-growing economy and
the astounding speed of urbanization as well as least-mature
governance. As essential research material, the book provides
strong support for policy makers and planners by comprehensively
covering three groups of strategies, characterized by the words
"avoid" (e.g., urban form design and control of car ownership),
"shift" (e.g., establishing comprehensive transportation systems
and increasing public transportation systems for both intracity and
intercity travel), and "improve" (e.g., redesign of paratransit
system, low-emission vehicles, intelligent transportation systems,
and eco-life). These are elaborated in the book alongside
consideration of the uncertainty of policy effects in the future.
The book is also valuable for scholars and scientists because of
the diverse methodologies presented and proposed herein. Among
those are the four-step model with full feedback mechanisms, the
bi-level programming model with sustainability goals, data
envelopment analysis and stochastic frontier analysis approaches,
structural equation models, discrete and/or continuous choice
models, copula-based models, survival models, and driving risk
models with short-term memory. Using data collected from more than
ten Asian cities, including those in both developed and developing
nations, the pathway to sustainable transport in Asia gradually
becomes clear.
Asian transportation systems and services, as well as their usage,
are fraught with challenges. This handbook therefore seeks to
examine the possible solutions to the problems faced by the region.
It illustrates the history of transportation development in Asia
and provides a comprehensive overview of research on urban and
intercity transport. Presenting an extensive literature review and
detailed summaries of the major findings and methodologies, this
book also offers suggestions for future research activities from
top-level international researchers. Written from an
interdisciplinary perspective, the topics covered include:
Transportation systems across Asia; Traffic accidents; Air
pollution; Land use and logistics; Transport governance.
Considering the population and economic development scale, as well
as the diverse cultures of Asia, the Routledge Handbook of
Transport in Asia will be a valuable resource for students and
scholars of transportation, Asian development and Asian Studies in
general.

Transportation Amid Pandemics: Practices and Policies is the first
reference on pandemics (especially COVID-19) in the context of
transport, logistics, and supply chains. This book investigates the
relationships between pandemics and transport and evaluates impacts
of COVID-19 and effects of policy responses to address them. It
explores how to recover from pandemics, reveals governance for
immediate policy responses and future innovations, suggests
strategies for post-pandemic sustainable and resilient development,
shares lessons of COVID-19 policymaking across countries, and
discusses how to transform transport systems for a better future.
Transportation Amid Pandemics offers transport researchers and
policymakers the scientific evidence they need to support their
decisions and solutions against pandemics. "Curiosity and research
brought me to discover an excellent handbook covering the relations
between COVID 19 and the transport reality. It is called
"Transportation amid Pandemics -Lessons Learned from COVID-19" and
has been published this year. 2022 happens to be the year of the
50th anniversary of the first report to The Club of Rome "The
Limits to Growth". The new book covers evidences from all over the
world, and offers policy recommendations from a great variety of
perspectives". Ernst Ulrich von Weizsaecker
Transport and Energy Research: A Behavioral Perspective deals with
the transport issues associated with energy from a behavioral
perspective in an interdisciplinary and systematic way. Existing
transport and energy research has focused on technologies and
energy efficiency; however, more efficient technologies do not
necessarily lead to energy reduction. Unfortunately, very limited
behavioral research can be found in the literature. This book
covers major transport modes in major countries. It emphasizes the
importance of researching the behaviors of not only transport and
energy service users, but also transport and energy service
providers, policy makers, organizations, company managers, and
other stakeholders who are involved in and/or affected by transport
and energy policies. It not only overviews the history of relevant
research and presents new developments but also extensively
discusses the future research issues. Various findings are
summarized for reducing energy consumption from a behavioral
perspective. This book provides readers with behavioral insights
into more effective policymaking. Behavioral interventions are
recommended as a key policy instrument for reducing energy
consumption in a sustainable way. It provides policy makers with
comprehensive insights into making more effective policies over the
whole process of policymaking. The book can serve as a handbook for
researchers and a textbook for graduate students in the fields of
transport, energy, environment, planning, public policy, behavioral
studies, and so on.
