Modernism in British arts, literature and philosophy is manifest as a unique thing around and after 1900. This paradigm shift in all arts and modern science made traditional beliefs, norms, and social patterns obsolete. Forerunners were 19th-century intellectuals, who favoured a new and lively spiritual culture. A new concept of reality not only changed the view of nature (atomic physics) but also the structure and gist of literature. As the belief in the visible world declined, consciousness and symbolism (surface and depth structures) occupied the focus of attention. Literature became an autonomous field. From artistic subjectivity modernism led the way to crystallizing creations of complex imaginative structures. Simultaneously, neorealism in philosophy and relativity in physics substituted a worn-out mechanistic world picture by a scientific reality reaching far beyond the visible world.

Seine epochalen Theorien des Imagismus und Vortizismus sind die Apizes der Ismen des fin de siecle; seine dichterischen Prinzipien und Methoden der Ausgangspunkt fur die Entwicklung einer Kunst und Literatur fur das neue 20. Jahrhundert. Diese Studie untersucht, wie sich seine Lyrik als ein dem Sinnhaften entgegengestellter, extratextlicher Gegenstand fixieren lasst und ob sich eine unmittelbare Verbindung zwischen Pounds Lyrik und physischer Prasenz herstellen lasst. Erstens als Wiederbelebung des klassischen Ideals ut pictura poesis und zweitens als Grundlage der Materialitatsdebatte, die ein zentrales Paradigma der modernen literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschung ist.

The term "surface tension" reflects the nature of intermolecular forces in neighboring liquid and vapor phases. Surface tension decreases with increasing temperature, and drops to zero value at critical temperature. To a small extent, it is influenced by pressure and the interface curvature. An Introduction to Surface Tension discusses the possibility of a significant use of surfactants, polymers, alkali and microbes for surface tension alteration based on work done in the last decades, with new insight on the chemical aspects, especially for gas recovery from shale by altering surface tension. In closing, the authors propose a model based on the concept that surfactant and polymer molecules rotate during the process reaching the equilibrium surface state, which is different from the conventional adsorption theory.

The papers in this book examine the thematic, structural and aesthetic relationship between medieval English literature and a wide variety of more recent modern texts. Some of the contributors re-examine the concepts of authority and representation in Chretien and Malory and of medieval romance and the modern novel, while Caxton's Morte Darthur is interpreted from the point of view of Norbert Elias; other focuses of interest are the love-death motif in nineteenth-century novels, the comic in contemporary British fiction, the literary representations of Arthurian characters (Galahad, Tristan, Gawain), and recent Beowulf translations. In addition, there are socio-historic and generic readings of Chaucer's Sir Thopas and of Troilus and Criseyde, of Ipomadon and Malory's Morte Darthur. Aspects of medieval heritage are uncovered in Horace Walpole, Furst Puckler-Muskau, Georg Kaiser, A. S. Byatt, David Lodge, Fay Weldon, Iris Murdoch, the Irish novelist Eamonn Sweeney and the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, in William Gibson's cyberpunk novel Neuromancer and Peter Ackroyd's recent Clerkenwell Tales. Irish Postmodernism is a still unfinished project. The variety of critical approaches to its literature reflects its complexity. This study queries representative current discussions, emphasising aspects like nationhood, postcolonialism, genre and gender and offers an insight in the latest interpretations of John Banville's so-called 'tetralogy' (Doctor Copernicus, Kepler, The Newton Letter, Mefisto). Different facets of postmodern theory are applied to an exemplary analysis of three novelistic works (Banville's Eclipse, Toibin's The Blackwater Lightship, Madden's One by One in the Darkness).
