For the past 20 years, Bernhard Winking and Martin Froh have been
active along the entire spectrum of architecture and urban planning
in Europe and China. With their award-winning redevelopment of
Spiegel-Insel in Hamburg and the addition to the Esplanade, Winking
* Froh Architekten have demonstrated in exemplary fashion how
ensembles of post-war modernism can be preserved in a manner
appropriate to their status as historic monuments yet further
developed in a contemporary manner. Their residential buildings -
in Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg and other places - are distinctive yet
blend into their respective surroundings and use sustainable and
durable materials. Sparing use of sculptural design elements goes
hand in hand with attractive floor plans. Another aspect of their
work is urban development projects such as Europaplatz in
Heidelberg and Book City in Ningbo.

The architects behind the new cultural park, Tianjin Grand Theater,
offer an insight into their design process. A new culture park has
been created in recent years in the Chinese harbour city of
Tianjin. The Tianjin Grand Theater occupies a key position on this
site, entering into a dialogue with its architectural surroundings.
The circular form of the roof construction relates to that of the
Natural History Museum there in such a way that it creates a
connection between the earthbound museum and the seemingly floating
theatre building. In this volume, the architects responsible
illuminate the Grand Theater by means of texts and images, and show
how syntheses can be created between western and eastern traditions
in a highly modern building. The architecture critic Jurgen Tietz
discusses the building in a detailed critique. Text in English and
German.
The Sound of Architecture - in accordance with this key notion, for
more than five decades the architect Eckhard Gerber and his firm
have been producing award-winning projects, which have attracted
widespread international attention in the fields of architecture,
urban design, interior design, and landscape design. On the
occasion of his eightieth birthday, this book traces Gerber's life
and architectural career. In personal contributions, long-standing
friends, comrades, and colleagues recount their own experiences and
involvement in the work of the architect. In the context of Eckhard
Gerber's work and person, the publication also includes new
contributions from renowned publicists and other personalities
which discuss the culture of building and competitions,
architecture and urban design in their historical context, the
social responsibility of architecture, and the functional and
subjective significance of building and landscape.
