Organized Business and the New Global Order (Hardcover): Justin Greenwood, H. Jacek Organized Business and the New Global Order (Hardcover)
Justin Greenwood, H. Jacek
bundle available
R2,810 Discovery Miles 28 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The editors have assembled an international team of expert scholars together to describe and analyze the role of organized business in creating, and responding to, the regionalization and internationalization of markets and politics. Chapters focus on theoretical issues, discrete regions drawn from the major trading regimes around the globe, and sectors, and together address a number of important issues: First, to what extent does organised business push the deepening and widening of regional and global trading regimes? Second, does the development of these multi-level governance regimes in turn pull organised business into more comprehensive levels of organisation and public policy coordination? The collection concludes that globalization and the 'new regionalism' cannot be understood without recognising the key role of business organizations. This book is unique because no other volume details the critical relationship between organized business and globalization/new regionalism.

Functional and Territorial Interest Representation in the EU (Hardcover): Michele Knodt, Christine Quittkat, Justin Greenwood Functional and Territorial Interest Representation in the EU (Hardcover)
Michele Knodt, Christine Quittkat, Justin Greenwood
R2,598 Discovery Miles 25 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite a substantial legacy of literature on EU interest representation, there is no systematic analysis available on whether a European model of interest representation in EU governance is detectable across functional, and territorial, categories of actors. 'Functional' actors include associations for business interests, the professions, and trade unions, as well as 'NGOs' and social movements; territorial based entities include public actors (such as regional and local government), as well as actors primarily organised at territorial level. What are the similarities and differences between territorial, and functional, based entities, and are the similarities greater than the differences? Are the differences sufficient to justify the use of different analytical tools? Are the differences within these categories more significant than those across them? Is there a 'professionalised European lobbying class' across all actor types? Does national embeddedness make a difference? Which factors explain the success of actors to participate in European governance? This book was originally published as special issue of Journal of European Integration.

One explanation for the development of European integration concerns the actions and perspectives of private and public collective interests at the European level. This work seeks to address questions surrounding the European political economy and asks how and why collective action is formed at the European level. It also considers whether collective action at the transnational level is driven by rational, utility maximizing behaviour or whether explanations couched in social terms are more convincing. Chapters introduce empirical studies in the domains of business, the professions, consumers and environmental interests. By examining group pressure at the European level, this volume aims to reach conclusions which it hopes may contribute to a better understanding of policy making in the European Union.

Why is the EU so reliant upon exchanges with interest organisations? - What safeguards have been developed to prevent capture by special interests, and how effective are these? - How does the EU system of interest representation compare with those of other systems, and what are its unique features? The fully revised fourth edition of this highly-acclaimed book provides an authoritative and comprehensive assessment of the role of organized interests in the EU. Showing that interest representation is a key aspect of the European project, it examines the significance of interests for everyday policy-making, for European integration, and for the democratic legitimacy of the EU. Accessibly written and thoroughly updated, the new edition contains additional material on the regulation of lobbying and the European Transparency Register.
