This second edition of Designed for Habitat presents twelve new
projects designed and built by architects and Habitat for Humanity.
The ways in which we think about affordable housing are being
challenged by designers and not-for-profit housing advocates such
as Habitat for Humanity and its affiliates. The projects chronicled
in this book consider home affordability through the lens of
monthly homeownership expenses, energy efficiency and residential
energy use, and issues of designed resilience to natural events
ranging from aging and accessibility concerns to natural disasters
and climate change. New to this edition, the projects are grouped
by Scale, Construction Technology, Energy & Affordability, and
Design & Context. Illustrated with over 100 color images, the
case studies include detailed plans and photographs to show how
these projects came about, the strategies used by each team to
approach the design and construction process, and the obstacles
they overcame to realize a successful outcome. The lessons and
insights presented will be a valuable resource, whether you're an
architect, architecture student, Habitat affiliate leader, or an
affordable housing advocate.
More than a decade has passed since path-breaking policies aimed at
liberalizing post-Soviet society were first introduced in Russia.
Today, these promises of freedom, equality, and justice remain
largely unfulfilled and Russia's political system continues to
exhibit signs of the deep-rooted problems that may well retard, if
not completely derail, any possibility of future reform. Against
this stark background, Civil Society and the Search for Justice in
Russia explores the various dimensions of Russia's civil society:
the meaning of, and search for, justice; the role of the Orthodox
church as a principal unifier in civil society; the need for new
freedoms for women and ethnic minorities; and the role of mass
education and the free press in inculcating and articulating new
civic values. Expertly blending the historical with the
theoretical, the recent with the empirical this work offers new
insight and analysis into the ability of a nascent Russian civil
society to engage effectively with the twenty-first century Russian
state to ensure social, religious, and political justice.
Using the Mississippi Gulf Coast as a case study, this book focuses
on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and develops the concept of
resilience and how it applies to Homeland Security in the aftermath
of the worst natural disaster to hit the United States. Through the
lens of the national response to Hurricane Katrina and the local
lens of the recovery of the Mississippi Gulf Coast community, this
work elucidates the particular qualities that make a community and
a nation more resilient, discussing resilience as a concept and an
application. Additionally, it explores in-depth the interconnected
fields that comprise resilience; including economic, social,
infrastructure, and political domains. By examining what went
right, what went wrong, and what can be improved upon during the
Mississippi Gulf Coast's recovery, scholars and policymakers can
better understand community resilience not just as a concept, but
also as a practice.
